Come on by and see if you guessed right, or not! Then click the link over there to come on back here and complain about how I keep making these harder and harder. Winking Or, just hang around the site, enjoy the other clips, photos and videos, and say 'hey' in the Guest Book (even if you've done so before; I like repeat visitors!) Go to www.SteelGuitarJazz.com and click on the left for the 'Listening Library'.

Wow! I finally managed to correctly identify one of your mystery steelers, and with a large amount of certainty in my guess to boot.

Looking forward to Mystery Steeler #11.

The way I knew it wasn't me was that whenever I'm playing any kind of jazz oriented music I rarely ever slide into offbeats. In other words I tend to pick all the offbeats. For example if you have some 8th notes going by like 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & etc. I'll pick all the &s. Any slides will be into the 1,2,3 or 4. If you have 16ths going by, 1 ee & ah 2 ee & ah etc., I'll pick all the ees and ahs. Any slides will be into 1,2,3,or 4 or one of the &s. This isn't anything I think about it's just the way I've been playing for 30 years.

If I had to explain why I do that I'd say it's something to do with syncopation within a stream. If you're already habitually picking all the offbeats, then at some particular instant you get the urge to syncopate, you're already ready to do that, like having you're foot near the brake pedal in case some idiot jaywalks in front of you. This is, of course, not the only way to syncopate. It's just a habit of mine that clued me in that it wasn't me on that tape even though I was getting a lot of votes.

Having said all that, how about old Dan! That boy was gettin' with it!

Thanks Dave!

I especially liked the Frank Zappa 'votes'. That tune (which is a Miles Davis tune, I forget the name) does have a lot of that 70s Zappa vibe.

I could tell immediately that it wasn't Dave Easley. For one thing, I supplied the recording. For another, Dave would play a lot cooler part (I was just winging it).

BTW, there was no 'distortion' on that track, in terms of a pedal. It was just really, really loud. The band was 'Battlestar Dislexica', which is really the band 'Crack Sabbath' with sax player Craig Flore replacing Skerek.
