I recently acquired a vintage Emmons S-10 P/P with 3+4. This is my first experience with an Emmons push pull pedal steel and wanted to share a few observations.
I got the steel from Joey Ace who had Al Brisco set it up for him. The pedals are standard Emmons and the knees are: LKL raises 4 and 8 E-F, LKR lowers 2 D#-D-C#, RKL lowers 4 and 8 E-D# and RKR raises 1 F#-G-G# and 2 D#-E.
My other steels have been set up Day so the Emmons set up is a bit different for me. What was common is that I raise 4 and 8 with the LKL and lower 4and 8 with the RKL. So my first thought was to send it off to have it set up how I have been playing but the steel works so well and sounds so good that I hesitated to do that right away. I also wanted to try a few of the changes that I haven’t used before. The feel stop on the LKR and RKR is very nice, so I thought I would play with that awhile before I made any changes.
What I’ve found is that I can play the Emmons set up after a few weeks with the guitar and my ankle works just fine that way. I may set up my other steel Emmons but find I can go between the two without too much of a problem. I would like the B-Bb change on the LKR and may move the 2nd string lower to the RKR but for now I’m just enjoying the sound of this steel. It seems to stay in tune better than any steel I’ve owned and I don’t notice any cabinet drop. Could it be the P/P mechanics? The pedal action is great and the tone super.
A special thanks to Al for his obvious knowledge of the P/P set up and to Joey for the trade. I’m a pretty happy camper!

Welcome to the world of push/pull. Soon you'll be addicted to the feel and the tone.
Whatever you do, don't play high on the neck because you will be spoiled for life. |

Danny,
I've already spent way too much time up there!

Russ, you need to contact Emmons and get a "correct" knob for you tone control! I just got one for my recently purchased 79'S-10 that is a twin to yours to replace the big aluminum blob off an $89.00 stereo recever that it had on it and I swear it made a great sounding guitar even better!
I have 3 PP's and the only thing that comes close is my SD-12 MSA Legend.

It looks original to me but I leave it on bi-pass so I don't use it much.

Russ, that's an original Emmons tone knob of the style used in the 1960's. Don't change it. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Thanks Herb. The steel is #1159 and Joey thought it was from around 1970.

Russ,
That's a very nice guitar. You just can't beat the tone of a good P/P. I have 3 myself.

Here's a shot with the "BLOB" still in place!
Thing was so big I'm sure it was killing off string vibrations!!! LOL

If you are getting use to the Emmons pedal order and have no problems with it, you might consider staying with that, the only reason being that more people play the Emmons setup, so trading is easier, also trying out other people's guitars and new guitars at shows is easier. |

David,
That is one thing I have been considering. If I ever need to sell the PP is would be much easier to sell it as it is and I can change my other steel myself.
