Can a pick-up be de-wound without losing the original coil tension, or does the pick-up have to be stripped and re-wound?

Gary,
If the pickup was potted in wax you will most likely need to strip it and start over. That copper wire is pretty thin and delicate. If I understand your question I would think it would be near impossible to keep the tension on a coil as you unwind and rewind it.
