Had an interesting fault develop and fixed last week. My old session 500 was losing power and when first turned on, it would distort for a while and then clear itself. Then I would have to have the amp set at a very high volume all night to hear it.
GUESS WHAT IT WAS?

>It was the Black Widow speaker. It had a foam insert in the back gauze which had deteriorated, worked its way into the magnet and gone like glue which seized up the movement of the speaker. My mate who does the repairs separated the cone/speaker from the magnet and cleaned it all out with a non metallic scraper and put it back together again and its like a new one again..
Has anyone ever had this happen?

Yes, very common problem on older B/W's. A fine metal screen would have been soooooo much better, but that would have cost 50 cents more. |

Yes, it was the old BW with the spider web decal in a 1976 Session 400. I was able to clean mine up also. _________________ Bad wine is better than no wine. |

I had the same thing happen in my 1980 Session500. As soon as it distorted I took it to my tech thinking the old capacitors were needing replacement. He cleaned the foam remains out and the amp sounds like new. Still weighs too much though. |
