I want to record me playing steel &/0r fiddle over an mp3 (or could be wav) I've made. So the mp3 has guitar & vocal on it. I put it on audacity & thinking I can just record another track with say the steel on it, I set up a mike input, push record & it (audacity) sets up another track for the recording.....but I can't hear the original track so I can't play with it....can it be done or is more sophisticated equipment (software) needed?

Bill
I've been playing around with Audacity
for a couple of weeks.
Try this,
From the Audacity program click
on Edit, go down to Preferences.
It should default in the Audio I/O field.
There you can select
Play other instrument while listening
Play new track while recording

This should help.
