| there is something about his tone on this record that mesmerizes me. is it timbre of an a6 tuning or something else? |

Remington Rides Again was recorded in 1959 at Goldstar Studios in Houston TX.
Herb was using a triple neck Stringmaster with A6, E13 and his unique F#13 tuning.
It was plugged into a Fender Twin.
He used all 3 tunings on this album.
RRA is one of my all time favorite albums.
When I listen to it, it seems like everything's okay
and the world is a happy place.
I've told him that, and he says it's because the musicians were all good friends and they had a lot of fun recording the tunes.

A6 hi2lo - E C# A F# E C# A F#
E13 - E C# B G# F# D G# E
F#13 - E C# G# E Bb F# D# F#
The 8th string F# is a whole step above the 1st string.
The 7th string D# is 1/2 step lower than the 1st string.
This is the tuning that Herb gave Speedy West that got him his Capitol Recording contract.
Herb doesn't use E13 or F#13 any more.
He uses A6 when he plays non pedal, retuning to C#m7 for certain tunes such as Boot Heel Drag.
When he plays his pedal guitar he uses an extended A6 tuning with his own copedent. |
