There was a guy, Rodney or Randy someone.....oh my God. He was singing about his son eating chicken nuggets in a booster seat. The man was just not a singer, simple as that. I've heard better intonation on a Sears electric guitar that's been in an igloo all winter.

This show is indefensible, in my opinion. Usually I leave these shows on for the sublime effect. Now I can't even find the humor anymore. It's just plain disturbing.

Well... I just heard "Pitch in Low Places"...

edit:
Wait... was that lyric just now, "I'm afraid that I can't sing..."?

A friend of mine just called me on this. When is someone in power going to call the bluff on this nonsense? Its a Rythm And Blues and Rock show. There is NOTHING country about it. When are the names like Brooks And Dunn or Allen Jackson going to publicly get up and denounce this crap. Its not country and has nothing to do with country music, or country people. Bull s@#$%^!

Brooks and Dunn country? You have to be kidding. They sound more rock these days than the rockers. I don't care if they do carry a steeler. He is there to make them look legit.

Oh, well, what's the use. It's the same rant after all these shows. I was flipping back and forth, and these things seem to have slipped into this mediocre, sameness. They all have to have some stunt like what's-her-name doing a wet t-shirt contest at the end of the song. Guess they need things like that to make up for the lack of real musical quality. Anyway, does that guy in Sugarland ever do anything except fun-strumming and smiling stupidly? Just wondering...

Brad Paisley is one of the more "Country" sounding singers still out there, but does anyone else feel like he just plays fast licks for no apparent reason. His steel player sounded good and was up in the mix and then Brad rips a bunch of notes that make no sense to me. I like hot picking, but my heroes like James Burton or Big E or Hughey, LLoyd Green and others put the hot licks where they belong and not every time they play a fill. He's got skills on the guitar, I'd just like to hear some taste from him.

So we get the show a little later on the West Coast so I just heard Brad playing a 335 backing up "Make The World Go Away". Nice tasteful playing. Maybe he should get off the Tele for awhile. Might slow him down a bit.

I think that was the (Chet Atkins inspired) Gibson "Country Gentleman" model(very appropriate guitar name for an Eddy Arnold tribute) he was playing. What ever it was, it was the best performance on the whole show.

Sorry (glad) I missed the awards show last night.

If I were into "commercial country" then I would have been very interested in it. Fortunately all the work I do is "traditional" country.

All the pictures that were on the Tennessean this morning, I didn't see any of the men with anything but grungy street clothes. Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Porter, etc are probably turning over in their graves at the clothes that are worn on stage today.

What a treat it would be to see someone like Buck Owens and the Buckaroos again. Just standing there, playing and singing. No jumping around, no ear rings hanging, no shabby hair, no shirt-tails hanging out, no guitar player looking like he's trying to straddle a big ditch, swaying, trying to figure out which side he wants to be on....

Just talent..

I didn't watch any of the awards..I just get upset when I do.

All you cats who like the "new country" would have really been pleased with last night's show. For "real country" admirers it was just plain puke and there's no other description for the mess as far as I am concerned.

I've never heard so many singers so far off pitch in my life.Everyone can have a bad night occaisonally but not all on the same night.Thank God the Mets and Yankees were on the sports channel and I could switch back and forth. Maybe it's just me but I can't understand half the words that (mainly the girls) are singing or should I say attempting to sing. Oh well I do have a choice, either watch and bitch or watch something else but it's more fun bitching !

I have an infallible method for picking the song of the year. I just have to hate a song more than any other on the radio and it will win for sure. Congratulations to Paul and I agree about Brad's picking. The speed is impressive but I like the tasteful things he's very capable of playing. If I'd known there would be a wet T shirt contest I might have watched it all.

There was a commercial on what I was watching so I flipped over for some masochism, just in time to see Kenny? or Keith? - anyway, some musician starting tearing off a lively R&R steel break, and the camera man cut right to the six-string guitarist, who strummed a chord until the steel break was over, and the goon started singing again. It's all just twang, anyway.... Confused

Remember... in around 1950, Hank was "new country." It's all perspective. I started the thread about the pitch rambling that was going on all night, not whether or not it was "country" enough. That's going to change along with the times, as well.

And yes, congrats indeed to ol' Paul...

He spends a lot of his time destroying perfectly good cowboy hats.

I have played country music for 40+ years, and over time I have developed zero-tolerance for these stupid awards shows. Razz

Every time I see Sugarland on TV, I notice the widening physical distance between the two "leaders" and the rest of the band. Were the rest of them even there last night? I'm sure nobody cared as long as missus had on a tight pair of pants and the hillbilly Keith Richards was strutting his stuff.
