All Shobud's except for some early Permanents and Lloyd's personal LDG; are 24" scale.

that's interesting that lloyd's ldg has a different scale than his artist brand model. you'd think that would be an important item when creating a steel model based on the artists specs!

This in from Lloyd to explain more:
Quote:

"Some of the first Sho-Bud LDGs were built with a....241/2 inch scale. I have no reason why. Anyway, mine immediately started breaking 3rd strings.
After less than a week of this nonsense, and my complaints, I was informed of the scale length and rather than accept another steel I asked Shot if there was any solution. He had David Jackson or Paul Franklin, Sr. replace the key head with a shorter one. Problem solved.
The imprint from the original key head is still clearly visible on my steel. They quickly returned to the 24" scale and regular keyhead for production."
"However, the scale on my LDG still measures...241/2 inches."

Lloyd Green

Now as far as the superpro era and later...I haven't a clue....My interest in shobud stopped when pot metal parts came along.

Isn't that interesting? It seems that there is something to that "long keyhead and breaking strings" thing.

When they shortened the keyhead, the string breaking problem was solved!

So, the scale was kept longer,(24.5) but the keyhead was made shorter.

Strings stopped breaking.............

Hmmmmmmm..............

Anyone have any ideas why that happened?

It's for the same reason that you can make a longer scale work on a keyless guitar.
When you raise a string on a guitar with a regular keyhead, you are also stretching that portion of the string that extends past the roller nut.
That puts extra strain on the string and contributes to its breakage.
It also requires a longer throw on the pedal/lever.
