I just got back from 12 days on Oahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island. What a wonderful time!! I got to meet and hear Steve Cheney at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie on Oahu (close to the home of Joseph Kekuku). I also met a very nice guy who teaches slack key at the University there...Ka Ipo, who was very generous with his time and introduced me to Steve. I got to play a little at the exhibit there. While in Hanapepe, Kaua'i, I met slack key player Hal Kinnaman, who was very gracious and personable. Then at the airport in Lihue, Kaua'i, I met Ernest Palmeira and Albert Genovia. What great and friendly folks. I got to play a couple of tunes on Ernest's D8 Fender Stringmaster, and chatted with these two fine musicians. Ernest gave me a CD which has been in my player going pretty much non-stop. It was a great vacation and I hated to come back home to reality...but that's the way life is. Thanks to all who made our visit so special.

Billy,
It would be interesting to know how you met Kaipo, Hal Kinnaman,Ernest Palmeira and Albert Genovia.
Of all these names in your post I know only Ernie Palmeira and am sort of acquainted with Steve Cheney.
I find Ernie to be a quiet, but very nice guy. It takes him a little time to warm up. Did you eat at his favorite restaurant in Kapaa? He goes there every day. The last time I was on Kauai I spent the day with him eating, doing a show in the Town Center in Lihue and just talking story. I would like to see him get invited to one of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Conventions. He used to be the regular steel player at the Coco Palms. He brings back a lot of memories in the 1960's.
Aloha,
Don |

Aloha Don....
I just met Ernest and Albert at the airport in Lihue. I was tipped off that they would be playing there from 9:30 - 11:30 am in the airport lobby. I suppose to welcome the Haoles and others. So as we were flying out that afternoon, I decided we would just go to the airport early. Albert and Ernest were playing and there was no one watching or listening, just passing by. So I pulled up a seat and cheered them on with applause and comments. Between songs I introduced myself, told them I had played steel for over 50 years and they played a request ("Sand"). Then we talked some more and Ernest wanted me to play, so I got behind his stringmaster and played a couple of tunes with Albert while Ernest watched. I am sure I did not impress him, but he was very gracious and gave me a CD. So my entire encounter with them only lasted about 45 minutes. I did not know that Ernest lives in Kapa'a. I had been at a time share in Kapa'a for a week. Anyway, some nice memories and I made a few new friends. I will post some pictures when I can. Mohalo Don.

Well, I am still not getting the pictures to load. I can't seem to get them to load, maybe it is a size thing. Who says size doesn't matter? When I figure it out, I will post some pictures....or would someone volunteer to help me out here, please? Mohalo....

Billy:
To post a pic:
Poke the upload picture button on the reply page.
That pops open a window. Use the browse button in this window to navigate to the pic on your hard drive.
Highlight the pic and open it.
The path to the pic should appear in the address bar next to the browse button.
Hit send in that same window.
That should cause the pic to become visible in a second window.
Click insert picture, just below the image.
You should then see the code and path to the picture in the reply form. I think it will automatically resize if needed.
Do a preview to check your work, then submit, and presto-matic, there it is:

Thanks, Mitch for the tips, but it still doesn't work for me. I did everything you said, located the jpeg and all, but when I hit send there is a pause for about 15 to 20 seconds, then the fields clear and the picture does not appear. I don't know where to go from here.

Billy:
Does the pic have a .jpg extension? Not sure, but it may have to be a .jpg and not a huge one.
If you navigate to it directly on your hard drive, outside of the SG forum, and poke it, will it open?
When you highlight the pic and open it in the reply form, does the path to it appear as I stated in my instructions?
When you hit send, does it at least pop open a second window, even if the pic doesn't appear?
You can always move over to the testing forum and try other pix or exhaust all possibilities.
Or go to the computer forum and ask Wiz for help. I don't understand why it won't work if it 1s ordinary jpg file.

What you describe is exactly what happens when you try to post a picture that is too big or not in the right format.
Try this: open your picture in Paint, click on Image then Stretch/Skew. Change both Horizontal and Vertical from 100% to 20%, click OK, then rename your picture and save it, making sure you save it in the .jpg format. You now have a 1/25 copy of your original picture. Now try using that image on the Forum. |

What do you know!! It worked! I used Microsoft Photo Editor...and somehow I got there. It appears more distorted than the original, but at least it is there!!

Too bad that's about as much as you'll ever see of these 2, as they only play the airport gig sporatically, at best. The occassional Monday 9-11:30am, Lehui Airport. |

Don...
I think I did Harbor Lights and some other tune I can't remember. But it was fun...Ernest was not using a volume pedal, and he ran the signal through a mixer at the airport so he didn't have to drag an amp in there. When the job was finished, he put his stringmaster in a soft gigbag with a shoulder strap and away he went!
