What is a good tuner to use for tuning a Steel Guitar. My old Korg finally has lost it's tuning capabilities. I called the local music stores and they don't have a clue what to use. We only have guitar stores here no steel dealers. Thought I would ask and then go shoppng on the net. |

The Turbo Tuner is excellent. They are coming out in a stompbox format in July. Super accurate and easy to program. It also has a Chromatic mode that shows you what note your playing.

TU-12 for me, too. It's compact, well made, accurate, and it'll tuck away in your steel-seat.
I'm done with rack-tuners - they're overkill in my opinion; I don't know why I carried all that extra weight for years! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

|
|
I agree with Roger, I have an old TU-12 and like it except that I sometimes forget to turn it off and the 9v. battery gets drained. Does Boss now make newer models that turn themselves off after 10 or 15 minutes of non-use? Thanks, steve t |

While looking up the tu-12 tuners I find they make a TU-15 with a few more features and it has auto shut off after thirty min. The price difference is $10.00 so it maybe well worth looking into. Thanks Paul H. |

Peterson Flip Strobe is good. I use it to tune ALL my instruments.

It comes with a special bracket for the steel guitar leg as opposed to some with a mic stand bracket. |

If you are "budget minded" and don't need anything fancy ( like me ) The Korg CA-30 works great.
(I refer to myself as being "budget minded". My wife calls me a cheapskate.)

My thoughts on tuners are that I only really need them for those times when I break a string during a performance. I need to get the new string tuned to a 'ball-park' pitch without being heard doing it.
As I then tune by ear, I only need my tuner to get me close - I tweak things until I like the sound of it. I like my Boss TU-12, but an even less-fancy one would probably do as well.
Recently I've been training myself to tune 'straight up' 440, and I admit to needing to check those G#s on the tuner; my ear is still telling me that they're sharp when they are actually correct, but I'm slowly learning!
What a joy it is to be in tune with the horns, reeds and the piano at last!!! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Lee I call my wife the same thing but she's probably that way because she came from a big family 10 kids I guess they had to stretch the dollar. Me small family and spoiled so I got the Strobo Flip hey for the extra $130 it sure looks good and it fits in the seat too in fact it still there my guitars came tuned already. Hope the one that's coming is tuned _________________ JCH 9/7

I love my Peterson Stroboflip! And the bracket Tamara mentions comes in two sizes: if the one that comes with it doesn't fit your steel's legs, they'll send you the other sized one for free.
It comes with preset profiles for tempered tuning of a lot of instruments, including pedal steel. Downside is that it is expensive for a tuner (~$200).
Happy hunting! _________________ Joe Buczek

Paul, thanks for the tip on the TU-15 with the automatic cutoff. It'd be worth it for me to get one being as forgetful as I am. steve t. |

I bought a Strobo tuner from Dick Meissome time ago and it was the best tuner i ever had in my short 75 years of age. Incidently, I still have the TU1200 that still works but is not on the same lever as the Stroboflip! |
