Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to release the little circular "clips" that hold the pull rods to the bellcranks on a Legrande? This is a 14-hole one, if that makes a difference.

They're spring steel, and just pull off. They make special tools to remove the clips, but I find that a pair of small needle-nosed pliers (the kind with serrated jaws) works pretty well.

Check eBay (search- Pedal Steel). There's a small tool that appears for sale fairly regularly that does exactly what you need.

Yes as Donnie says. Pull them off. Never pry them off. Ruins them. I take a small pair of lock ring plyers. Hook them in the eyes of the E clips.THey'll come right off. I use the butt end of a screw driver to push them back on.

A GOOD hardware store ( on of them ole' time real ones ) should have these and you should grab a bag full. If you pull a clip off and it looks ever so slightly warped or out of shape replace it. They should have the proper tool to expand the clip and remove it without damage as well. The Emmons website refers to them as 1/4 inch retainer rings.

Thanks, guys. The needle nose pliers did the trick. The insulated handle on my pliers works well for pushing them back on, too.

I'll see if I can track down some replacements. I can see how it would be easy for a warped one to fall off when you least expect it. There doesn't seem to be any ole' time real hardware stores left in Chicago, though. Ace kind of took over the city.

A split ring pliers is a needle-nose pliers with a very small "tooth" on one tip used to open the small metal rings that attach hooks onto fishing lures. These tools are available at most good fishing tackle shops and I use mine frequently for removing those nasty little clips.

I have relaced all the e-clips on my Legrand III with the spring retainers that Bobbe Seymour has. They work great and they never come off and are very east to disengage and re engage.

Call Bobbe and pick up a few to try.

I have always played Emmons, but I got to tell you, these could have been improved on years ago. They will put you out in laa laa land if they fall off.And they will now and then.So those ones that Bobby have are great to be more secure with knowing they will stay on.

I use "the tool" made by Clem Schmitz that I got off Ebay and it is a terrific little gadget that makes taking them on and putting them back on a piece of cake. Bravo to Clem!

You need retaining ring pliers in Chicago? I expect there are a few Sears around - they have a bunch of choices online. I would get a springed set - the cheap type with no spring work, but the spring makes it easier, to me.

[/quote]Thanks, I am really glad that you came up with a tool for those E-clips. I will be most happy to have it." Jerry

The above quote from the eBay post was mine. This is a great tool to handle the E clips. Actually the E clip is one of the best retainer methods any brand of guitar uses providing you have this tool.
