I got mine a couple of weeks ago and love it! I've been using it mostly for string things but on occasion when we do a rock tune I do slide guitar parts with it. Also, our lead singer does Marty Robbins "Don't Worry 'Bout Me" and I get to do the fuzz part like on the record. This thing is a lot of fun. Also if you have a Gibson 335 or SG style six stringer with the input jack on the front of the guitar you can use it on one of those too!..........JH in Va.

Hi Larry, I have one of the new ones that Bobbe is selling, and I have an old Music City BossTone. The new one seems pretty well made, and is a pretty good replica of the old one I have. The new one nails the tone, the gain, the weird low-end thing when the attack is backed off. I paid about the same for each of them. Mr. Mahoney, the gentleman who making the new ones, seems like a reallly good guy. I'm still trying to get a good technique for this effect, though. When the volume and attack are turned up it's a monster fuzz. The Bosstone has a lot of gain and sustain. It seems that the attack sort of blends in the fuzz more than it softens the attack like the blooming attack of a violin. I'm still trying to get the violin effects that these are famouse for.....any tips on how you guys get that violin effect (I am using the volume pedal to create the violin attack), and other tips on using the Bosstone?

Cliff, for violin things try unison strings such as the 2nd string lowered to C# along with the 5th string raised to C# or the 4th string raised to F# along with the 1st string. Also you can try a chorus unit along with the Bosstone. I've had good luck with that...........JH in Va.

Thanks, Jerry--that's very cool, that helps a lot. Now I have something to do with my chorus pedal!

If it's anything like the original, the battery will last almost it's shelf-life, about 3-5 years. (Incidentally, they usually work far better with an old, nearly-dead battery.)

In addition to what Jerry Hayes said about the unison strings, you can experiment with very slightly slanting the bar on the unisons to get a very slightly out of tune unison and you can hear the beats which increase the further out of perfect unison the strings become. A very slight beat adds to the violin sound and gives a somewhat chorus sound. Bobbe probably covered that in the article mentioned above but I did not go check it out.

Try strings 4,5 and 10, no pedals, (if memory serves me right)to get a cello sound. It helps to back the treble off your amp (or boost bass) and crank up the 'verb. I recorded on a few records back in the 70's using the string effects using the BossTone.

Did anybody ever use the string effects on the Session 500?
That was even accessable via a remote button you could clip to the leg of your guitar.

I had a Session 500 (when I could keep it working). I used the string effect on it and it wasn't bad. I still preferred the Boss Tone (actually, almost any fuzz will do - I used a Rat for a long while and could get the same effect). Also used an EQ stomp box set to cut my highs so I didn't have to turn the controls on my amp.

I found that you needed a lot of fuzz (overdrive doesn't do it), lots of reverb, and lots of lows on your amp.

In the 80's, I was getting bored with the steel guitar, meaning playing several nights a week, the same songs, the same signature licks, well... you get the picture. I decided then to buy a synthesizer to take care of string , horn and organ parts.

I've owned both of the “Originals” and now I bought the ‘Mahoney’ BOSSTONE from Bobbe a few weeks ago and it's back in business-as-usual, soundwise for me! Get one, while they are still in stock!

The Session 500 string effect only works correctly if you use the 3-cord hookup. I used it for many jobs along with my Boss tone, but then went to the 'one' cord to amp hookup which clobbered the string tone, but I still use the Boss Tone, and the amp's phase effect.

Thanx,
Jim

I didn't like the string effect in the Session 500. I tried it and never found a setting I liked.

I have an original model Bosstone, that I put in a different box because the original pots went bad and I couldn't find replacements.

I haven't thought about the Bosstone for a long time. I think I'll try my POD XT and see if I can come up with a close alternative.
