From time to time, several Forumites have mentioned how they're not happy with their current sounds or playing in general. We all brag about how great this player is as compared to that player or style......we've all done it.

Have you ever wondered what John Hughey, or Buddy Emmons, or Lloyd Green, or JERRY BYRD sounded like in their earliest days of playing? The early efforts by most of our current stars is sadly lacking however, thanks to some really great friends, I'm able to share with the fans of JERRY BYRD, some of his early day playing, when he was but about 18-19 years of age.

It's a far cry from his later playing and yet, one can detect small hints of the greatness that was yet to be.
I thought you'd like to hear it and it can be found on the JERRY BYRD - Fan Club.com.........web site.

And, what about that strong rythmn playing by vocalist, Ernie Lee? You sure don't get to hear much of that, anymore.

And if you're thinking about getting a great guitar, say....a Fender triple-8, like what's on eBay at this time, you can hear what it sounds like by checking in and giving a listen to "Ray's CD's"...."Fat Boy Rag", an old Bob Wills' arrangement.
This was played in a dance hall environment, thro' a Fender 4x10 Bassman amp. The radio station simply sat a mike in front of the amps and mixed a little bit as it aired. This recording was made via a hand held recorder back in the early 1950's, as it came in over the radio.

WE three, hammered out this instrumental arrangement in about 20 minutes; PRIOR to the radio broadcast.
I was about 19 years of age.

Enjoy!

Two of the most choice pieces of steel guitar history are at your finger tips at this time and yet they have not managed to pull any significant number of Forumites to the site.

If you've got the time and inclination, why not share with me what it is that draws you to a particular site and, what does NOT.

Perhaps, I've been merely wasting my time and everyone else's as well, on a topic that is no longer of real interest to today's steel playing population. No matter how I view it, it's YOUR VIEWS that really count.

The seller is asking $3,995.

I think I'll pass.

Ray,
Sitting in the Phx airport, connected thru their WiFi,I'm unable to get the "Music (Listen)" tab to play any music. I tried several different selections to no avail.
The site looks great and a wealth of information! Ill try a little later when I get to St. Louis. (going early to get a good seat for the next convention Laughing )

You have to remember Ray that the modern steel guitarist rarely, and I really do mean "rarely" play a steel guitar straight up. The world of electronics and add on gizmos have changed original and actual sound of the steel guitar completely.

You tell me how many modern steel guitarists even want to sound like steels in the recordings of the early fifties and sixties.

Personally, I like to play my instruments straight up. If I want to change their tone and what not, I'll do it with my own style of playing.

Ray, you will get many more listening and viewing if you bother to put the link to the items you're describing.
I don't see a mention of the url ANYWHERE in your post..

FWIW just an observation, of course it's your prerogative not to post the links, but I often wonder WHY ?

For example. you say
Quote:
WE three, hammered out this instrumental arrangement in about 20 minutes; PRIOR to the radio broadcast.
I was about 19 years of age.

What?, Where?
Earlier you say ""Ray's CD's"...."Fat Boy Rag", an old Bob Wills' arrangement." but only regular forum members know that's on the Jerry Byrd site.. No link to the hypertext or url ..
even the page you refer to HASN'T got a "Clickable Link" only "Embedded Audio.
See HERE

THIS is where the file is resident Fat Boy Rag
Click the name to play it !!

I shouldn't have to go and search through the "Source Code" of the page to find and play the file you're trying to promote in you post.. YOU should make the links more accessible via the facilities available via BBCode. That is what most members do !!

Sorry about the diatribe Ray, but you DID ask as to why etc.
You said

My answer is that you're NOT completing the post properly with clickable links that the average joe can get to..

Of course I'm "Presuming" that you were soliciting comments with that statement..
With the greatest of pleasure I'll help you in anyway I can regarding either hosting or formating the HTML for the links or just the BBCode for the forum posts, ANYTIME my friend..

Ray, Nice piece of playing. I too am a fan of players that use the straight into the amp method. Plug and Play. Maybe a VP maybe not. There is much discussion on The Forum about Tone. Hands or equipment/effects. I think both are valid. When I hear someone like Jerry Byrd or Buddy Charleton in their early recordings, it puts my attention on the player.
Thanks Basilh for posting the link. It did make it much easier. Ray, Basilh has a point. Please don't stop putting this stuff on the forum. Having links to click on does make it more accessible.

Ray, that was my immediate thought, too. When I read your post my reaction was, "I should check out Ray's website more often," but then I realised that I didn't have an immediate link to it. Sad
No, of course you're not wasting your time. Everyone appreciates the work you've put into your website over the years, and I'm sure Jerry appreciates the way you've kept his name in prominence. Smile
So, my tip is keep up the good work, but make it more directly accessible, and then you'll have a lot more people viewing the site. Very Happy

Thanks to EACH of YOU! Your comments are truly valued.

I realize that this failure on my part has been discused previously here on the Forum.......BUT..

I have since found a wonderful guy to help me out with my web site..... The item Basil mentioned has not yet come up with my webmaster guy.

Perhaps Basil can inform me in DETAIL (I'm only an amatuer computer geek!) as to the EXACT STEPS to TAKE TO POST anyone of the songs already on the site.
I hopefully will be able to follow those directions when installing the next tunes.

THANKS guys! I really appreicate it.
