I use a 3" Dunlop bar with the bottom/indentated end rounded to allow playable contact with the lowest string per attempted grip, and am having much success in finding very useful combinations, both individually/on their own and when incorporated with the bar's travel to/from slanted/straight.

Far from mastering these odd manipulations, it's proven possible and useful for me.

Anybody else use/tried this?

Hi Ron !! I have thought about rounding off both ends of a bar also !! I turn my bar around sometimes when I'm home practicing and you can get some pretty good "Byrd" splits chords on three lower strings in a C-6th tuning but I've never tried it out on a job !! I think it's a great idea and someone should work on that !! I wonder if Jerry ever tried it ??? Eddie "C" ( the old non-pedal geezer )

The ideal bar for this-

The top two bars are Twister bars sold by Scotty and the bottom bar was made by forumite Jim Burden.

Eddie, the bar I'm using is your standard Dunlop with the flat indented bottom end. But I do have a true dbl. ender in raw spun stock (3") that I'll have chromed to see how that works, but the Dunlop works so well, no need.
A small JB Dunlop would be easier to handle, but mine has a hard lip that doesn't play nice like the rounded lip, which is why I didn't persue this further long ago until I got this bigger bar with the rounded lip.

I too, once tried the 'flip the bar around' and use the nose to split the strings at the bottom, but I find the the bar I'm using does it better.

Nice bars, Jude! What's the deminsions of the largest?

How does that rounded end respond to the thumb? I'm guessing that standard reverse slants are alot more difficult, eh? Or perhaps we use a different method?

Edward, I've briefly used my raw dbl. ender, and it is a bit more squirrelly, but not unmanagable.

What do you think of this bar I made? It's like a dobro bar but with a rounded end...seems heavy enough for a decent steel sound, but ALOT quicker to move around.

hmmmmm ..., could be.

Another thing is, mass = tone. There was a significant boost in tone when I got my 3"X3/4" Dunlop from my JB Dunlop. So, I'd be leary of anything less.
But, your bar could possibly be spun for slants.
Is it round on each end?
