Any recommendations on this (besides "don't bother")? I can't really play guitar, but I am thinking about getting one to fool around with at home. Are any of them any better than the others?
One I've considered that is pretty cheap is the "Peavey Generation Triple/Single EX". I am finding it for less than $150 new on EBay. |

Dale, I'd get a Squier Tele, they can be had pretty cheap and as they're able to be set up pretty good you can actually play a gig with one of 'em. I bought one and used it for a second guitar and tuned it down a whole tone for some special things. And remember, Squire is Fender so it's actually a "real" Telecaster........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

I'll second what Jerry said. Right now, you can pickup a butterscotch Squier Tele for fairly cheap.
They are pretty good guitars for the cash!!!

Some of the Squier Teles are pretty nice, but the Peavey's are nice too, and there are lot's of other cheap import Tele copies, SX, Jay Turser, etc...
They are all made overseas, China, Indonesia etc.. but for the money they are all pretty good guitars.
That said, I'd shop for a used Mexican made Standard Tele, you can find them for $250 or so, sometimes cheaper, they have the same pots and switch as the USA Teles, the stock pu's are decent, a vintage Tele bridge will replace the stock flat 6 saddle bridge w/o any modification. |

it is a pretty nice guitar (top loader) if you decide you want something different. They are good guitars and have decent hardware. |

I have a Greg Bennett model, made by Samick, Tele style guitar that I would part with reasonably. Plays and sounds good and it is really good quality for an inport.

Still yet, those Samicks, Peaveys, etc. are just copies! The Squire is the only "cheapie" authorized to have the name "Telecaster" on the headstock as is is a Tele..........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Doesn't matter to me who's name is on the headstock, it's all about playability, sound, and quality. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

Fender MIM (Made in Mexico) Telecaster. Cheap, many parts interchangable with the American made Teles and has good resale. They play great. eBay always has a number of them. |

Probably run you just a bit more but I second the MIM Teles. All the others mentioned(Samick,Peavey, etc.) are great guitars but resale is usually not very good.
Look for a used MIM Tele with upgraded pickups and electronics and you'll have yourself a killer guitar for not much money. |

True, but at this price I'm not sure I'd even worry about resale. I've never played a Samick Tele but I have had a Greg Bennett Jazz box (which I sold but not because I didn't like it) and my daughter has a lefty Strat-style Samick. Great bang for the buck IMHO. |
