Has anyone purchased and used this DVD? If so, what is your opinion? Good, not so good, excellent, not excellent?
What tuning does he use?
Thanks in advance,
John |

He uses an open major tuning, B*E*B*E*G#*B*C#*E. It is a very useful tool to get going on that style, and if you watch the way he handles the bar you can get a lot from his technique for eliminating excess noise. His ability to extend note runs without picking is uncanny. |

I'd recommend it, especially if you are new to the style. |

I've got it. I think it's worth owning.
He teaches three tune - "Amazing Grace", a bluesy gospel tune, and a very cool, swinging, up-tempo version of "I'll Fly Away". The video includes a "jam along with the Campbell Brothers" section which you can either think of as filler or a bonus track .
His tuning is a variation of an E6 tuning, but his style is more of a single line melodic style so the tuning isn't that critical. Everything he teaches can be applied to whatever tuning you want to use. The important thing about the tuning is that the bass strings go really low, which he uses to good effect. It sure made me wish that I had an 8-string lap steel so I could play those low notes.
All in all, it's a good introduction to that style of playing. It's probably more useful for someone who already plays lap steel as opposed to a complete beginner. For example, there's no tab included. |
