hey there del,
its always good to see san diego steelers here on the forum. i liked your question and lets hope we get some response. if you want to come hear me play, i will be pickin the sho bud at balboa park in the organ pavilion with a great bunch of guys called the COUNTRY ACES on july the 25th at 6:15. if you do decide to go and you cant tell who i am by the fact that i am sittin behind a steel, then just look for the band member who is 40 years younger than the rest of the band. i am very fortunate to be able to pick with these guys that have so much playing time under their belt. i have learned a lot from this band that likes playing real country and western music.

My blues rock band, the Fickle Pigs, took 2 months off while I recovered from my accident, but we have gigs lined up on July 19 and August 9.
I play steel on about 2/3rds of the tunes. Usually with distortion. My playing in this context bears more resemblence to the old slide players like Robert Johnson and Fred McDowell, than it does to the more traditional Nashville style. |

Had a blast playing the Crystal Palace Sat. night, following Buck. Played with Steve Davis. Great bunch of guys and a packed house. GO see the msometime as they're there every Sat. after Buck's set.
A side note....Buck had Don's old fiddle restored and played about 3 songs on it. Pretty moving for anyone into Buck Owens history, etc.

I've been out to see Al's jazz band several times and I can tell you, they are HOT. Al is an amazing player. One of the best I've ever heard.
Every steel player in the world should be REQUIRED to see him play. |

If you're interested in hearing one of the best country bands in southern California check out their web site "workingcowboyband.com." The big plus is, Gerry Walker manufacture of the Stereo Steel Amplifier is their steel man. Gerry is awesome playing the 12 string extended E9th and of course you get to hear his Stereo Steel amp first hand. It and instrumentals like "Take The A Train" will blow your socks off. Gerry is given lots of lead room and with his variety of approach in country and jazz; well just ask anyone who's heard him. Playing this weekend in San Juan Capistrano at the San Juan Depot Bar and Grill. |

Yeah Gerry is one heck of a player!!! He really doesnt take too many gigs unless he really likes the music, so it must be good.
BTW, I'm playing with a pretty jazzy little country band myself around So. Cal. the next couple weeks. This weekend (tonight & tomorrow) at Billy B's in Riverside. Next weekend at Ron's Red Eye in Fallbrook. |
