This old Oahu has what appears to be an added pickup in front of the handrest. Does that do anything to the value, or are Oahus so available that not much of anything would affect the price (except serious wear, etc.)?

Without seeing the modification, it's hard to say. Got pictures?

Click on "This" (first word) in the first post and you'll get there. That one is similar to one of my first lap steels, without the mods. I have no idea what the mod does to the value, it's a really old model, the original pickup in mine looked like something from a Flintstone episode when I opened it up..

Thanks, Steinar. I didn't see that link.

I would guess that such a pickup would not affect the value of such a guitar by much. It's in pretty poor condition compared to other Oahu Tonemaster lap steels I've seen on eBay, plus you can get a new Gold Tone lap steel that looks just like this and probably sounds better than this would.

Here's what mine looked like, the seller claimed it was early/mid 30s, I don't know if that was correct or not. Can't remember what I paid for it but it wasn't all that much..

Some of these sound amazing. I have owned 3 of them and one was the sweetest, most liquid sounding steel I have owned to date. I wouldn't worry about the added pickup, but I wouldn't pay a lot based on the condition.
