Hi all,
I thought I would share with you a nice evening last night at "Romancing the Bean" in Burbank where Jim Eaton exposed some of his Pedal Steel talent.
I took 3 short video clips with my digital picture camera.
Mike Perlowin was present and was very appreciative
of Jim's precision playing (He also gave me some valuable advice and even a ride back to the Mall. Thank you Mike).
Quite a player is Jim Eaton. A great learning experience for me.

Able,
Thank you so much for comming out to our gig last night and for posting the clips!
It was my first gig with my "new" 79' S10 Emmons PP and is very nice to get a chance to hear what it sounds like out front, thanks so much.
It was also nice to have Mike Perlowin in the crowd to give a listen to our music. It's nice to see forum member smiling faces when I remember to look up!

I've heard Jim before (in fact with that same singer) so there were no surprises.
But while I enjoyed Jim's playing, what I really picked up on was the reaction of the other people there. This event featured several different performers, each doing 3 songs. Aside from one fellow who played something on a banjo, everybody there sang and played the guitar, as one would expect. Most if not all of the musicians and their fans had never seen or heard a pedal steel guitar before, and they all really liked it. After Jim and his singer got off, people were talking to him asking questions, commenting how nice he sounded etc.
I think Jim is on the right track here, getting involved with a member of the singer/songwriter community and bringing the steel into their world.
I think this is where the immediate future of the steel guitar lies. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Hi Jim, Mike,
It was a pleasure meeting you again, chatting and
listening to wonderful Steel and songs.
As a matter of fact you two have inspired me and as I was home on Sunday afternoon, I thought to learn my second Lap Steel tune. I chose "SHE IS NOT YOU" (Elvis Presley) actually, I am sure that some here will want the excellent backing track I will be using. I' ll gladely offer it to whoever want to do a skilled version of the tune as mine will be lousy. I' ll try and record it tomorrow as it is a Holiday for L.A. City employees (like me).
But Jim, you were right, I am stumbling upon the
difficulty of moving around with the Dunlop tone bar as it has edges all around and it gets caught underneath the strings. You will see what I am talking about if I make a video.
I really feel the need of a rounded front like your Ernie Ball.
Thank you both, you have been an inspiration.
Blessings,
Abel |

Abel, Let me be the first to take you up on your offer of the backing track and don't sell yourself so short, I think you did a great job on your first steel guitar attempt with "Tear Drop". You inspired me to learn it. Your musical background and enthusiasm give you a big headstart. |

Hi Jim,
I did visit your Myspace when you sent me the link and found some superb tunes there. But I really liked listening to you live. You are a great performer, and you actually inspired me to pick up the Lap Steel again last night and today.
I just recorded "She is Not You" and wll be posting it now.
You will notice that I borrowed an ending style that you did on one of the videos I posted of you.
I loved it. (mine is lousy).
Regards,
Abel |
