Check out this video clip of the amazing Tuck Andress - a guy who seems to have a few more fingers than the average guitarist. Bear with me Brad, as this really is steel-related even though he's a standard guitarist.

At about 3:40, Tuck lets loose with some audacious slap harmonics. We steelers have palm harmonics, knuckle harmonics, finger pick harmonics, etc. but It seems to me that slap harmonics are one technique that steel guitarists can't really access because it's based on caroming off the actual fretboard. We get a kind of "pwahh" as we rake a chord in harmonics as opposed to the "thwack" Tuck gets. What do you think?

Well, I certainly agree with you that slap harmonics are not possible on a steel guitar since the strings are raised so far off the neck. No "thwacking" allowed. Winking
