I'm thinking about switching up from 6 to 8 strings for C6 tuning. I really LOVE the tone of guitars like Asher, CruzTone and GeorgeBoards, among others, but I don't want to spend that much money.

Hi,
Have a quick look at eBay item no. 160223827617. It's a Rickenbacker Ace. It looks to be in good condition and at $525 it strikes me as a decent buy. But I'm light years away from being an expert. I have no connection with the seller but if I wasn't already awash with lap steels I'd have bought it by this time. If you're a Cruztone man I think you'd be disappointed with the Fender. Perhaps others who really know will comment. Good luck anyway.  |

That guitar appears to be in great shape/condition.
I have a Dual-Pro, which of course is a double barreled version of that one. It's not as trebly as a String Master, but still is somewhat treble. I don't know how the Cruztones sound, so I can't compare that way. I like the one I have, but it's all a matter of taste I guess.. |

| I believe this is misnamed. The Deluxe 8 would be the same style as the Stringmaster with two conventional pick ups. This is a Professional 8 which is the single neck version of the Professional D8 and the Custom with three necks. These are great sounding guitars. I wouldn't compare it to the Champion. They are a unique sound with the string thru Trapezoid pups. One drawback is you run out of room to play up at the higher frets. They are 22 1/2 inch scale and with the pickup over the strings to get up to the highest frets you have to put your right hand over the pup. The Stringmaster seems to be the most coveted of the old Fenders, but in some ways I prefer the sound of these Trap or Boxcar pick up models. |

Dave,
A single six or eight with a Trap PU is a Deluxe. A double six or eight with Trap PUs is a Dual Professional, and a triple eight with Traps is a Custom.
When the Stringmaster line was standardized in 1955, the Trapezoid PU guitars were discontinued, and the name "Deluxe" was given to the new singleneck guitar with Stringmaster features. So both are Deluxes, just of different eras.
Leo sure made that one confusing, huh?

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure what they called the Trap versions, but I assumed it wasn't the same as the Stringmaster types. I guess you can't assume anything about old Leo. |
