Nice shape ...some checking, a few paint chips etc.. Plain top that looks like spruce.. No fancy inlay,Squareneck.. Hard case.. Whats it worth? .. I plan to post it for sale here on the forum for a friend . I would like to give someone a nice deal without getting ripped off. My friend told me it was a 1935, but he must have been smoking something pungent... Serial # is 7 745 which would seem to mean 745th instrument of 1977, unless I am messed up in my Dobro #'s.. any help??...bob

He might be right. Go to this site. Click on Dobro, and scroll 2/3s of the way down the page. It lists Dobro serial numbers by year. The list is for 1929 to 1937 wood body Dobros even though the article is about the metal body Dobros the author collects.

1929 to 1937 Dobro Serial numbers
by M.Cass. Note the 1929 to 1937 serial number info is not very accurate. For example I own a Dobro metal body M-62 with the serial number 1832. According to the list below it should be 1930. But no metal body Dobro existed before 1935. So you can see the serial number info below is not 100% reliable and the information below applies mostly to wooden body resonator Dobro guitars. Pleaes keep this in mind. Also I don't have any 1937 to 1942 Dobro serial number info. Serial numbers for metal body Dobros very scarce. Serial numbers are stamped into the top of the peghead. No factory serial number records are available. The numbers below are a general guide, and are not reliable for dating the instrument solely on the serial number.

Number range Year
800 - 1400 1929
1400 - 2000 1930
2000 - 2600 1931
2600 - 3200 1932
3200 - 3900 1933
4000s 1933 (mostly Regal made)
5000 - 5600 1933 (California made)
5700 - 7600 1934-1936 (California made)
8000 - 9900 1936 & 1937
L9000s 1937 (Regal made)
A prefix 1936
B prefix or suffix 1931-1932 (most Cyclops wood models)
M prefix 1935-1937
No serial number: on 1930s Dobros, this happens a lot, and for no explainable reason.

Serial # is 7 745 D..... Grover sealed tuners are factory.. I doubt sealed Grover tuners even existed in the 30's... any other definative way I can be sure what I am trying to sell???... I am pretty sure the serial # on this guitar means it was built in the 70's.. bob

Bob, for Pete's sake! Go to the site! The OMI serial numbers are also there. If you had mentioned earlier that there was a "D", which stands for "Wood Body," I would have copied those for you.

Been there John.. several times,.... as stated, from what I can see it was made in 77.. The 7 prefix means 7th year of the 70's decade, and D means wood... bob

I bought a sunburst 1976 squareneck OMI Dobro in good shape (and with the original plastic (!) nut replaced by a nice brass one) for $770 recently. It didn't sell on eBay and I made an offer to the seller. Seems like a fair price and about the going rate for these.

Cheers,

Fred

I should add that I "followed" a few auctions on eBay for 70s OMI squareneck Dobros to see if I had gotten a good deal, and the ones I have seen on eBay have sold in that price region (around $800).

Cheers,

Fred
