I am in the market for a new ride and am curious about recommendations and experiences with PSG & gear transport.
I don't want full sized SUV or a soccer mom mininvan or a pickup. I need a space that easy to load and long enough for the psg case (36"). Side by side my gear is 42" psg case, amp, rack, and seat.
So far the coolest vehicle so far I have seen is a Dodge Nitro. It has a pull out deck in the back that has tie down hooks built in and will hold more weight than I need. It looks like you don't even have to bend over to load gear in the back.
Any recommendations of vehicles to go look at. |

I've used a 1965 Ford, a 1990 Chevy and currently a 2000 Ford conversion van. Open the back doors, set it in already set-up and it cushions between the door and the back of the last bench seat. Amp sits in beside it and pack-seat beneath it.
If I get sleepy, the queen size bed unfolds for me. The rear of the van is such that you CANNOT SEE INSIDE.
No worry about theft while your grabbing a bite to eat. Station wagons were notorious for that! |

My personal ride is a PT Cruiser. I drop the back seat and have plenty of room to load. As a bonus, it sure feels good goin' down the highway at 30mpg. _________________ The only thing better than doing what you love is having someone that loves you enough to let you do it.

I'm on the P T Cruiser band wagon !! I've had two and will be getting my third one soon !! Lots of room , the back opens up and you can take out seats for more room !! Three of my musician friends also have them and the're great for lugging equipment and the M P G is good !! Eddie "C" ( the old non-pedal geezer ) |

Ditto on the PT Cruiser. I really enjoy driving the car. Holds my steel, seat, amp, PD250 P.A., wire bag, two monitor speakers, stands and folding dolly. Getting 27 mpg.......hard to be the combination and be easy to load. |

My 12 year old Camry is not long for the world, and I too am looking buying a new car in the not too distant future. I'm thinking of a Honda Element. But I'll check out the PT cruiser after reading the other comments on this thread. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Bobbe, all my gear fits into the Mini Cooper but it's real pain to load it and get it out with putting scratches on MiniMe.
So far I also looked at the Chevy HHR... retro looks and a nice rear cargo area & they make a panel truck version with rear doors with no glass or outside door handles. I saw the Pontiac Torrent too, like a small suv. The entire rear bench seat moves forward makes the cargo area deep enough for a psg but it's only 36" between the wheel wells too narrow to put it all in side by side. Monday I'm checking out Jeeps. |

I have a Dodge Caravan,BUT,use my 1983 Dodge Colt[only 117000 miles on it] to carry my equipment to gigs,A D-10 MSA,NV 112 amp,and stool. That little Colt does the job,She's not to pretty but gets twice the gas mileage as the Caravan, and she's paid for,and her tag is 30.00 bucks a year. Her name is Sweetpea, and my band wrote a song about her and put it on their last CD.DYKBC. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. My current ride is a Honda Element. It's an SUV, but far from full-sized. For me, it's the perfect gigging vehicle. I can generally get everything I need for myself - steel, amp, rack, drummer throne, a gig bag or two, and a guitar or two - into the back compartment, which has a pull-down deck in the back.
The floor is completely flat and made out of a polycarbonate type of material - if I pull out the back seats and run it as a 2-seater, I can get a bunch of stuff in there. I've run with a Leslie cab, keyboards, PA stuff, and other guitars and amps all piled in with my stuff. It's almost as if they anticipated my needs as a gigging musician and just built it for that.
Besides - it's tall enough that I can sit my 6'4" frame straight up in the driver's seat with a tall cowboy hat on and still be nowhere close to hitting the ceiling.
Uh - these are a bit of an "acquired taste" in the looks department. But once I got past the initial shock, it really is fine. |

I have 2 Ford Aerostars and love them plenty of room, 7 pasengers, top rack, 2 baby seats, holds all my gear behind last seat and room for luggage, 20 plus miles per gal. My little Izuzu truck gets 30mph.
The Crysler has a huge trunk and room for all our suit cases and clothes so we mostly use that for show trips. We load the guitar and seat and amp on bottom and the other stuff on top. 27 mph.

I use a toyota Rav-4 and just fold up the 2 back seats and I load in my steel all set up against the raised seats with the 2 back seat belts hooked together with a double snap that lets the belts keep the steel more secure. the steel is riding close to mid-ship and gets very little road bump or vibrations. the rest of my gear then fills the rear of the back end. works very well for me. gets 30 mpg or so which helps a lot ,nowadays. |

The back 2 rows of the Saturn Outlook seats lay down. No seats to take out and none to raise up and be in the way. Great ride, good gas mileage. The back hatch lifts up, but the best thing I like is that the seats LAY FLAT!!!!!!!!!! LOTS OF ROOM!!!!!!!!!!!

Another PT Cruiser here.
Bigger SUVs are more comfortable, but as gas prices go up, I'm more comfortable with the PT.
Bought it new in Sept 2006.
I was looking for a recent used one, but couldn't resist the 0% financing on new ones.

I got my HHR in Feb 07, and it's "da bomb"!
Open up the back doors, load 1 NV-112 in each side with no sweat, open up the back hatch and load my steel and seat really easy as well.
Got the 2.2 w/5 speed manual, 30+ mpg and a great sounding C/D system too!

Nice HHR, Jim.
I was looking at one of those, myself.
I'm also thinking about one of those Scion XB's, with the new body style. Gobs of room for gear. The only thing about that one is that I'd rather buy American. |
