Topic: Checking a steel guitar amp as baggage with the airlines? |

Does anyone know if the airlines have restrictions (other than weight and size) about checking a speaker cabinet as baggage? I think I remember that they don't like the idea of magnets in the baggage compartment.
Thanks in advance for any info on this.

Hi TC:
I don't think there are any objections regarding shipping an amp with the airline. However, the handlers will treat it like baggage for better or worse.
You may consider shipping the amp via fed X to your hotel.

Back in the good old days I used to ship amps all the time (in flight cases). You just showed up at curbside baggage check with a fist full of $20 bills and checked them, no problem. Now an amp plus flight case would exceed weight limits.
I'd use a shipping company. |

I am checking two SPLIT cabs tomorrow morning, They will be in the new lightweight transport cases I have for them. Each is about 40 LBS including the case. Wish me luck!

I thought I would report back on the amp-as-baggage experience. It went great. I checked two SPLIT powered speaker cabinets at the curbside check in at Chicago O'Hare Airport. It costs $2 per amp to do so. I made two double walled telescoping lightweight cases out of vulcanized fiber and loaded it still weighs less than the 50LB limit (amp and case weigh 42LBS) The cabs arrived in Dallas in perfect condition and it was easy to check them. There is also room for a Sarno Tonic Tube Preamp in the bottom of the case!

Hi TC: Great news that all went well shipping the split cabs as baggage. That case for the amp is the ticket, light weight and tough.
