I am still in the beginner class but bought a brand new fessy d10 8&5 right before christmas.I am still playing off tabs for the most part and my question is about the vert knee lever.Mine effects the 5th and 10th strings,i have a vast library of tabs and the vert seems to be hardly called out for and when it is,it seems to be the 7th string.I still have been playing around with my vert on the 5th string and give a quick bump and run as i pedal into the 5th.It seems to give the cord some bounce at times,is this a main function of this vert?Just to add a little spice to the cord?Even though the tabs i play dont call for it it seems to as Jeff Newman would say turns vanilla cake into chocolate cake. _________________ fessenden d10,nashville 112,nashville 1000,peavey session 500,transtubefex,goodrich steeldriver 111,Gibson hound dog dobro,Appalacian resonator guitar.Marshall AS50D acoustic amp,Fishman Jerry Douglas imaging pedal. |

Jim,I assume that it lowers both B's to Bb? Try pushing down pedals A+B on the third fret...That makes your G major a C major, hold those pedals down and add the vertical that should make your Cmajor a Cminor. _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... Jim, you can get some nice, "cryin' 9th chords with that lever.
Play a G chord, 3rd fret, no pedals, strings 3, 4, and 5. Slide back to the 1st fret, pressing the "A" pedal, then release it, then hit the vertical lever. That has you playing a G9, which you can then resolve into a C chord at the 3rd fret with the pedals down (release the vertical lever). _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

Jim; _ _ _ Lee is on the right track! I always have touble explaining what he just did, but; since I kinda do te same thing, it makes good sense to me! If you can manage to find an old tab-course by Emmons, (Half/Dozen & also E9 Expo) you will find tabs which use the LKV, B's to Bb's in the Chorus/Bridge of the tune titled “I Just Destroyed The World”. _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

With a focus on the 5th string, the X Lever (vertical) offers the opportunity for 3 scale notes , Natural, Lower( Bb) and raise.( A Pedal)
Used along with the 8th string which also has 3 scale notes, natural,Raise and Lower, the 8 and 5 combination offers an immense amount of music and phrasing. Once the power is understood, 8 and 5 can be your "GO TO" strings for melody or phrases on the fly.
Try not to think in CHORDS but rather phrases from and within short scales.
On my website are several project tunes which use the power of 5 and 8 together.

Nice sound. Are you using a compressor? Which one?

Lee, you are referring to the lowering of the B's in your post right? I lower my B's with RKL. That is a cool move. Tony is correct. The 8 and 5 strings are wonderful for improvising. |

Hi Charles, thanks, there is very mild ( soft) compression on the 16 track but for the most part I set the channel EQ just like an amp, with the mids rolled back. I do use some ROOM reverb and a single slap 350 ms delay. This was recorded direct thru a cheap ART preamp , no external effects. |

Stu,
I tried a couple of these licks and they sounded really funky. Not the good kind of funky from the 70's that I like - more like fighting cats. I discovered that the vertical is lowering string 10 but it is raising my 5th string.
I just found this out because I have not used it until now. Is this something that is desirable, or is the rod just in the wrong hole? Do I have your permission to chenge it?
PS You are right about the pickups on this guitar. I messed around with my amp settings and can get just what I am looking for. (except for the right notes and timing )

Tim...Duh!Hey nothin' like a good cat fight...I finally found the right thread. The 5th string should also be lowering the B to Bb so that rod should be moved to a lowering hole...stupid me.I've got a really cool turnaround using the vertical I'll post it soon,my guitar is in it's case now.I'll Doug on Sun.and say hi.

I had my D10 Cherokee built in 1973. I wanted a verticle on my left leg. I had no idea what I wanted it to do. Clyde told me we could add it later when I figured out what I wanted. After struggling to half pedal my B to C# pedal to get an augment, I asked for a B to C on the 5th string. Altho I don't use it with any other combination, it gives me some good moves, especially from the fifth cord back to the first. In fact, I probably wear it out. I love this stuff.
That's my two cents.
Thanks,
Bryant |
