Hey, I'm looking for recommendations for strings for a 6 string lap steel(generic no-name). It looks like you might use different sets for different tunings??? If so, is there a basic beginner set I can use so I can experiment with different tunings? Thanks!!

the gagueing does seem to be a bit unconvetional, compared to regular guitars. I still don't know why. I just bought a set from the forum. Look towards the top where, there's a "strings" tab. I paid less for a 8 string set than I do for 6 strings at GC for my strat.

Click on "Strings" toward the top of this page, and scroll down to "Lap Steel Sets". The set gauged for C6 (lo-hi C E G A C E) and A6 (C# E F# A C# E) should also work for E13 (D E G# B C# E).

My expeience is that the guages sold in sets on the forum tend to work best for 24 to 25 length scale. For 22 1/2 or 23 inch scale slightly heavier strings work better. But the forum does sell individual strings as well.

there's some great info there, especially half way down the page, there's a list by Doug Beaumier that's really handy
