I just noticed during one of my many replays by JERRY BYRD........that he does a majority of his two string playing....using his thumb and pointer finger.
It was then I realized that I played that way for years, UNTIL, I attended one of Jeff Newman's Seminars wherein he stressed the use of the thumb and middle finger.
WHAT SAY YOU? Which two are your preference? |

Ray, I use any combination of thumb index and ring finger, and sometimes I involve my little finger for a strum. I work very hard on the finger picking . I try to pick complex patterns , they don't have to be musical but just awkward enough to make the fingers work different movements that they don't normally do.
I spend about two hours in the morning on this and play along with bunch of new songs in the afternoon.
I fill up the Mp3 player anything from country to jazz and classical , the classical is very suited to the steel as the movements are sometimes very slow and is a good way learn bar control, JR |

For years I also have been playing with the thumb and first. I have lately been trying to RE learn to the thumb and middle as this gives the opportunity to add the FIRST in between if necessary.
I feel the thumb and middle is a much more natural and comfortable POSITION for the right hand, especially if you have the desire to really play at meter. |

Dobro, lap, pedal steel and banjo thumb and two fingerpicks.
6-string (electric and acoustic) I "hybrid pick" with a flatpick and my middle and ring fingers with no fingerpicks. I can use my ring finger like crazy when hybrid picking, but can't play steel (or anything else) with a fingerpick on it. It feels totally natural playing hybrid, but awkward with a pick on it. _________________ No chops, but great tone
