Is it best to pack your picks & steel bar in your luggage when flying on the airlines?

I have a favorite bar that apparently is hollowed out, at least partially, and when I passed thro' the check-in bag searchers, they were bound and determined that they were going to take it apart. They could see the plastic blunt end plug and they were going to remove it but finally relented.

always carry a photo of your steel guitar with you playing it,

TSA asked me to "open" my bar for them once.

The picks stay with me. But the bar goes in my suitcase. If you've seen my picks, you know that there's no way I can get a new set at a music store.
