Some steels have natural or clear resonance in there sound or tone. Other steels have a hint of a raspy edge in there resonance. One noticeable attribute that may contribute to the tonal resonances difference is flocking (i.e., cloth cover maple undercarriage).

So the questions are:

Do undercarriages need to be flocked?

Does flocking really affect the tonal resonance?

I'm sorry Gary, but I can tell you right now which direction this flocking thing is going.

NO. Obviously not, (and some aren't). It's mostly an appearance thing.

Not enough for the average player to worry about.

btw...

My experience tells me that raspy sound usually comes from the bridge or the pickup.

When I re-do a guitar that came with flocking, I like to re-flock it.

Usually there are some extra holes in the cabinet that I fill and the re-flocking hides them.

I think that originally, the flocking was used in an attempt to diminish some of the "clanking" that went on under the hood.
Kind of like putting insulation under the hood of your car Very Happy

Jani,
I get my flocking materials from www.constantines.com
They have a flocking kit that goes quite a ways for $21.95.
That includes the glue, the flocking material aand a tube used to blow the material on. Just do a search for "flocking".
