Thomas,
I would guess, Sho-Bud, Maybe Bobbe S. or Micky D. would know. Buddy Emmons would know for sure. JD really had some smooth, heartfelt sounds going then, even by todays standard, it was great.

Don't know if it was a d-8 or d-10 he used on Golden Hits, just always assumed it was a D-10,He recorded this in the winter of 1961 and summer of 1962.In 1955 he got his first pedal steel,A Wright,He used it on Ray Price's Crazy Arms,In 1957 he got his first Sho-Bud Blue Darlin'.Maybe some one knows for SURE what he used on this great album,Now this is just my opinion ONLY,Even tho the Anita Kerr singers were great,I don't like all the vocals on this album, except maybe for the cut,Indian Love Call,Maybe this was the producers,Shelby Singleton or Jerry Kennedy's idea.DYKBC.

It was a D8, the pictures of him playing a D10 in the Bear Family cd booklet were taken years later than the album was recorded!

Was Jimmy tuned to D9 or E9 on that recording?

Eeh, tough to say since most of the songs on that album were done with C6, or at least using 6th tuning sounds. See, that's the great thing about those old recordings and these guys, they're making C6 sounds with E9 and vice versa with just with minimal pedal changes and eight strings. Ya gotta live and learn Cool !!! Today I was watching a footage from -58 of Ray Price doing Ivitation To The Blues with a very young Roger Miller. Steel break was by Jack Evins on a triple neck Sho Bud using reverse and forward slants, just like he did on the recordind!!!

i'm thinking it was a D9 tuning, since he plays Bud's Bounce in Eb.
