Are there any hard fast rules for using passing chords? Like 1 or 2 like notes of each chord before and after the passing chord. |

I can't think of any "rules" but you have to consider the key your are in. If you think about a chord melody style ...it's all about passing chords.
To me, the proper and tasteful use of passing chords shows a higher level of musical knowledge and sophistication. Anyone can play a 3 chord simple tune. |

All I know is them ones that Big E. or Jimmy Day threw in are the ones I can't find....
There is a particular passing chord that appears in Porter Wagoner's "I've enjoyed as much of this as I can stand", that I am currently searching for. Elusive it is... |

Ray what chords is it passing between.
Context no doubt means a lot for this.
A classic is
Play IV CHORD Dmajor7
then move root D to D#/Eb
drop maj7 C#/Db 1/2 step to bb7 C
Diminished I believe
then play an E7 V chord
Now from this V7Echord
play Ab D F B
(I, bV, bbVII, bIII (guitar inversion)
Full diminished I believe.
And resolve to I chord A

Chord Formulas :
half diminished :
1 b3 b5 b7
diminished :
1 b3 b5 bb7
minor/major 7 :
1 b3 5 7
This last I can do on C6 neck because
I drop the E's top Eb AND still have C to B lever
It is great for VII to I resolves _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.

But pedal steels have many! |
