Many of you have asked me for sound samples of the CruzTone guitar and here is the latest. Doug and Mike Johnstone put this together over the last 2 weeks. Here's a closeup of Doug's guitar.

A great demo. Doug really shows off the Cruztone. I love the variety of tones from the dual pickups and 5 way selector switch.

Thanks, that was great. What's the last tune he plays on there? I love to hear the chordal scope of the non pedal sound.

Great playing from Doug, and the guitar sounds wonderful.

What is the neck pickup, and what tuning(s) does Doug use here?

DOH!!! Embarassed
You said neck pickup. It's the Jason Lollar Chicago Steel. Looks and sounds beeyewteeful. I know I'm preachin to the choir when I say Jason knows what he's doin'. He and Stephanie do us all a great service and are really cool people ta boot.

Great sounding guitar, Great Player Exclamation

Question Are these pick ups wound in reverse polarities to each other so they act as a humbucker like the Stringmasters do?

Actually, positions 2 and 5 are the quietest. I think the reason for the polarity option is just to give different sounds.
There is one piece where I turned the switch clockwise every 8 bars or so. The 5 positions were in this order:
1. Lollar pickup
2. both in parallel
3. Aiello pickup, uncovered
4. both in series
5. both in series, opposite polarity

Yes, Colin's post is right about the tuning. It is kind of a Jerry Byrd or Joachin C6. But those guys wouldn't use the D string. Joachin, and sometimes Jerry, would use a B string instead. The B string is great for more chords, but I found I used the D more, especially more melodic playing. Of course the better solution would be to use 9 or 10 strings (next guitar, Colin????)

I was trying to play "People Will Say We're In Love" from Oklahoma by Richard Rogers. I'm shocked that you guys on the Steel Guitar Forum don't know your show tunes!

Yep. Except it's "Earnest" with an "a". Makes all the difference. In the context of this Forum, it's one of the funniest fake names I've ever seen.

Doug-- thanks for the info on the p/up positions in order of use. That was gonna be my next question.

Really fine playing on a very versatile instrument, especially the last tune. A far cry from "Texas Funeral".

It's about time Doug showed up on Youtube so everyone can see what a great musician he is. Back to the topic, the really neat thing about the Cruztone is all the sounds you can get out of two pickups.
