Mike Perlowin has just released his new CD "West Side Story". This is trulya remarkable CD - not like the average, but a sophisticated marvel that takes the Pedal Steel out of the stereotyped role. Try it, you'll like it! His e-mail address is:

I listened to West Side Story driving home from Dallas. No Ray Price shuffles here! Actually I must admit dissappointment, but it's probably stuff thats way over my head. Like looking at a classic painting and wondering what is this. I applaud anyone who promotes the steel out of the normal confinements of Bob Wills and Ray Price.

After talking with Mike in Dallas I put on "West Side Story" when I got back home. I not only enjoy the tunes but also Mike's performance of the interludes, overtures, undertures, etc. All of his ideas are so musical. My favorite at this point is "Tonight." As Mike mentioned, many of these songs would make excellent standards for the steel guitar. Well-done, Mike.

I was lucky enough to hear an earlier rush mix of Mike's WSS awhile back, & was completely knocked out! I'm sure the finished product has gotta be fantastic. I'm positive that Leonard Bernstein himself would be very proud to know that his masterpeice continues to live on in such new and unusual (yet legitimate)ways. Way to go Mike! |

WSS is on heavy rotation right now and I am loving it. Mike has given us two landmark CDs in WSS and Firebird Suite.
Thank you Mike. |

Mike, it has a nice cover
No kidding, I heard some parts you played for me in St Louis. It was great then, can only be greater now.
(Please be gentle in your commend on my CD )
Hope you keep on producing things like this! What 's next? Mozorvski? Mahler? Cage?
keep on going!

This is really some wonderful stuff- I hope lots of steelers will support Mike and his genre-busting efforts. One of these days this kind of recording will be what opens the world's eyes to Pedal steel as art. Great job Mike! |

I got my copy of West Side Story about 3 weeks ago. I listened to it a few times and I think I like it. However, I can’t help but compare the opening number to a evil sounding Jewelry box my sister had when we were kids.Down right scary I tell ya’!
His effort is noted. His musicianship is top notch. It’s a mind-altering experience! Quite legal! I would recommend that ya’ll give it a shot. It’s worth the money just to hear the steel lifted from its pigeonhole and into a brave new world.
Mike has tab available as well for all you studious, young steelers out there. Bravo Mike! Nice Job!

Thanks guys. I rarely come to this section of the forum and was unaware that this thread existed till today.
As I noted in the section on Steel Players, the CD was rejected by a record company because it's a steel guitar album. I'm now actively shopping it to other labels. Hopefully one will pick up on it soon. Meanwhile it is available from me.
I've tabbed out three of the tunes, The jet Song, Something's Coming, and Maria. I'll do the rest as time permits, and eventually compile them into a companion book for the CD. Meanwhile, if anybody want's the tabs I've already done, E-mail me and I'll send you the files.
