I love this question. I remember string 2 freaking me out at first.
Do this, play string 3, then 1, then 4, then string 2...
Does it make more sense now?

If your playin' a song with real cryin' steel, go past the twentieth fret near the pickup and play strings two and four or two, three and four with either A & B pedals down or leave the pedals open. The way to pick strings two, three and four is to put all three picks on those strings and slide the bar.

I use it on any song. It's the note between the notes you get with your 4th and 5th strings. I use it whenever I need that note and don't want to move the bar.

A PSG 400? That may be a Fender 400, which means you have no knee levers. Sooooo, learn the basic V-I (five-one) change below, also called a "walkdown". It will fit in most country songs.

Start at the 12th fret and play strings 2,3,5 with A and B pedals down.

(Still at the 12th fret) Let off A and B pedals and play strings 2,3,5 again.

Slide back to the 10th fret (no pedals) and play 2,3,5 again.

Go to the 7th fret and play 3,4,5 with A and B pedals down.

Sounds bad. What am I doing wrong?
The way to play it would be string 2 then 3 then 5 and so on...not as a chord?
Is it one of those runs that sound like you are gonna blow it but then it resolves into a spine tingler?
I'll keep trying...

Also try a minor chord with your A pedal down, pick the strings one at a time

go
5-5A-2-4-543ab

(VIchord to a IV chord)

Donnie,,this is a fender 400,,,8 strings. sunburst & black..has 4 floor pedals..but i took the D pedal off & put a LNL to lower the E's..that helped a lot i was having to take my foot of the volume to use it.
it has black cast pedals & plays really good..

thanks to all of you for your help.now i will try using everything you guys have told me about the #2 string...

remove the 2 cromatic strings and start with G# then you have those wonderful bottom strings that have more use than the cromatic strings, works for me on a 1000.

I respectfully disagree Earnest. There is so much music to be found on the first 2 chromatic strings. I would venture to guess that at least 90% of all country music recorded since those strings were added, has made use of those strings (or 1 of them). It would be like driving with only 1 gear.

You should think about selling that steel of yours to a collector for more than its worth and use the money to buy a newer, 10 string psg with knee levers. You'll be glad you did.
There are many ways to use that 2nd string. Keep diggin'. Don

I use it as a scale tone in the key of E (open position). Play string 5 no pedal (B note), while it is ringing press your "A" pedal (C# note), play string 2 no lever (D# note), play string 4 no pedal (E note). Nice little run that you hear all the time. You can keep going up the scale. Next play string 1 (F#), string 3 no pedal (G#). Play this forward or backwards at any speed (sounds real good played fast). You can let them all ring or block them any way you want.

A good example of the use of the second string is the song "Ain't No Thinking Thing" by Trace Adkins. (Edited to correct wrong song).

I just saw that you leave the 7th and 9th string off. Don't do this. These are very important to the tuning. Learn to use them. You are just shooting yourself in the foot by ignoring them.

Try playing string 8 (E note), string 7 (F#), string 6 (G#) and add pedal B while string 6 is ringing, play string 5 no pedals (B) and while it is ringing press your A pedal (C#). Block the notes except the times when you are activating your pedals. Simple little lick you hear everyone use.

I need to learn how to post tab.

String 9 gives you a flatted 7th note in the bass. Play any 2 note combination of strings 3,4,5,6,8,10 and add the 9th string. You will soon hear one of the uses for this string.

I assume you leave the strings off so you don't accidentally hit them. Actually, I just remembered that the 400 is an 8 string guitar, right? So, this wouldn't apply to you as you have to choose 2 strings to leave out. I would have (starting at string 1 and going down) F#, D#, G#, E, B, G#, F#, E. I'll leave the rest of the post as is for other new players that are using a 10 string. You should think about getting a 10 string with 3 (or 4) pedals and 4 (or 5) knee levers if you want to get real serious about the E9th tuning.

Sorry for the long post.

Another way to play Donny's suggestion is to substitue the 4th string lowered 1/2 step (your E - D# lever) for the second string. Let off the lever on the last chord using string 3,4,5. Same exact lick, but a different sound. Using the 2nd string seems to add a tension to the sound. Both are good licks depending of the feel (read: tension) you want.

Let's see if I can tab these. This is a walkdown from a B(B7) to E.

Donny's:
Tab:

2____12_____12_____10____
3____12B____12_____10____7B  O __12
4________________________7   R __12
5____12A____12_____10____7A    __12

Mine: E lowers string 4 from E to D#
Tab:

3___12B____12_____10_____7B  O
4___12E____12E____10E____7   R __12
5___12A____12_____10_____7A    __12
6__________________________    __12

The substitution of the 12th fret at the end gives basically the same sound as ending on the 7th but just let's you end up on a different fret in case you are going to continue the lick with a fill, say a slide down from 12 to 7 with AB pedals down. Of course, if you have the lever that raises string 4 from E to F, using Donny's example, you could make the slide down to fret 3 with the AF combination.

Can anyone explain why using the 2nd string sounds different than using the 4th lowered. Same note.
