Forgive me for tootin' my horn but, I was reading the latest copy of the Austin Chronicle and was amused that my musical boss, Kevin Fowler and our band got some votes in the Chronicle's annual music poll. In the past I've never been a member of any band that has received any recognition for it's efforts so this came as a delightful suprise. Congrats on all your catagories you placed in. It does feel good to know you are working with someone who IS actually making noise in the business.
One thing stuck out at me looking at all the award placements. Don't get me wrong, I like Bob Schneider, but "best singer/songwriter" AND "best songwriter"? Bruce Robison placed, I think, fifth with a HUGE number 1, "Angry All The Time". That should be a gimme for sure!! Why does Austin turn their backs on local artists who "make it"? That is flat wrong!! |

Janice, don't you know, rub board and musical saws are an important part of modern music! 
Anyway, congratulations to those performers. I'm sure they take playing their instruments as seriously as we take our own playing. They probably had no idea they would receive votes for their artistry. If only one steel guitarist in Austin's community was recognized for his/her efforts, Lloyd's as good a choice as any. Congratulations on placing, Lloyd.
Also, I forgot to mention: A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Dale Watson and our own Ricky Davis for Dale placing #1 in the "Country Band" category. Way to go Dale & Ricky, you deserve it!

Well, first of all let me say congratulations to Glenn and Ricky on their respective awards. But here's where I start to rain on the parade.
As Janis said "Unfortunently Steel Players are lumped with verious instraments including rubboards". Yes Mambo John Treanor was placed in the best miscelaneous instrument category, as was Champ Hood as a fiddle player. It would have been nice if someone had have actually noticed them when they were alive.
Also, IMHO, the very fact that fiddles and steel guitars have to placed under the other instruments category is pretty ridiculous. This is supposed to be Texas after all.
I have no ideas who Bob Schneider is other than the fact that he is/was dating Sandra Bullock. I think that tells you all you need to know about the majority of these poll results. |

Thanks Steve, although I would venture a guess that I had little impact on the voters. I'm just fortunate to be playing with a good band.

It used to be there was a steel guitar category. Junior Brown, Marty Muse, and Scott Walls all received well deserved recognition for their considerable talents. (Marty, this is right isn't it?) I don't know why that category no longer exists. There are more steel players (pedal, non-pedal, dobro, etc.) in Austin now than ever before.
As for the fiddle vote, there is a "Strings" category and Champ Hood placed 2nd behind Tosca (does anyone know who Tosca is?). His son Warren, who honors Champ with both his brilliance on the violin and his humble compassion as a person, placed 5th in the same category.
A little aside about Warren: Those of us in Austin, that know Warren Hood, will agree when I say here is a musician who is destined to be a true great. At age 18 he's already making some huge "waves" among his peers. Just a stunning performer. Check him out.
About Mambo John Treanor: He was recognized for washboard. What happened to his traps playing? Also, he did get inducted in the Austin Musician Hall of Fame along with the notorious Dan del Santo (both posthumously).
It seems that people feel compelled to honor folks after they no longer can enjoy the honor.

Thanks for the clarification. I too wonder why Steel was dropped as a catagory.
Also if fiddles are under strings why should they also be under miscelanious.

Hey Guys thanks for the nice Congrates on the award for the country band thing.
I guess Dale went and excepted it as I was out somewhere else and don't frequent those type deals anyways.
Funny thing is last year we won it also...and we went to accept it....but Dale got kicked out of the cerimony.....ah...ha........cause he didn't have a stamp that went with the badge that you get with the wrist band that you have to optain from a staff member in a little booth after you park 2 miles away....."go figure"......I'll tell ya where they can stick their Award........Badabing...!!!!
There is a nice compliment Dale gave us on the DaleWatson.com website.......but as you can tell....I don't care about the going ons that it takes to get the recongnition.....I just pick.

Ricky, that story just about sums up the whole deal
Silly me I noticed the strings category while having a similar rant about the awards yesterday..... Tosca at #one !?!?!? What the heck is that?
I guess it's really just furthur proof that popular tastes in the "live music capiatl of the world" are becoming as mainstream as they are everywhere else. But what the heck, like Ricky said, who cares! |
