I wish I could thank somebody for playing for me last night but I think every steel player within 300 miles was at the ET Record Shop to hear Buddy Emmons except me. I bet all the piano/fiddle/tuba/whatever were subbing last night. I did manage to get the whole show on tape and no I won't sell or give away a copy so don't ask..HA! So did you go to see the man play or what? Will somebody tell me what he used for equipment? Oh yeah Carol Lee Cooper said everone was wearing derby hats to honor the BIG E in case you didn't get to hear the show. Johnny Bush sounded his usual swinging great self too.  |

Frank,I notice Peavey amp behind Buddy but I don`t know wich one it was,and of course he played Emmons black steel but I can`t tell you was it p/p or Legrande (I was too far)but I can tell you that sounded like a Buddy 100% (but then again we all know that he can play anything and make it sound good).Hey btw.sorry you missed the show,I am broke and thanks for offering me to sub for you last night but I wouldn`t miss that show for nothing.I have hot dog`s and chilli for supper today but I also have something that I will remember for a long time.

That was an amazing show!!!! I want to thank the forum for letting me know about it! Bush & Emmons seem like the belong together. Great great time.
Ps. Mike Sweeney sounded great at the Palace earlier super super tone!

| I went, I heard, I saw and I have pictures. I'll post them as soon as I download them to my computer. I was fortunate to have seen and heard three (3) Hall Of Fame steel players play last night. John Hughey was an absolute knock out at Legends and I got a private concert from Lloyd Green prior to going to Legends. WOW, what a night! It would have been four (4) but I was too tired to go to Jimmie Crawford's house after the Midnight Jamboree. I'll try for another marathon some other time. |

A great night! Lots of laughs, and a terrific atmosphere.
Buddy sounded wonderful, as usual, even if he looked less than happy with his own efforts at times. All those shuffles were amazing, and Emmons 'feels' those like no-one else! I thoroughly enjoyed Johnny Bush (the first time I saw him) AND the rest of the band, too.
Buddy played the LeGrande III, and it looked like a Session 400 - I can't be certain, though.
Good to meet you there, Jim, and I, too, loved Mike Sweeney's playing that night.
PS: Oh yes, and millinery by Smiley Roberts

Amen to that brother Mike! My wife, I and some friends attended an event at the Ryman Sat nite, while walking up to the Ryman at about 7:10 pm we stopped outside at Legends corner and watched John play one song. The Zum looked and sounded great!!  |

Man Buddy Emmons and Johnny Bush Sounded great last night!I wished I could have been there but,I got to hear it on the radio. I really enjoyed the song that Big "E" played but I never can remember the name of it.Somebody help me out hear please.

I heard most of the show on the radio. It was a really cool idea for those steel players to be there and wearing derbys. It had to be be Smiley's idea. I wish I could have been there.
I got a kick out of the note sent from the "Steel Guitar Mob" when they wrote "we really dig what you are trying to do!" Funny stuff!

I was going to say something about Buddy's playing tone (Perhaps Attack would be a better adjective...) saturday night. I couldn't trust these old ears on the way home after a loud gig so I waited to see if anyone else noticed it.
Today a friend called to ask if I had heard Johnny Bush on WSM last night with Eddy Subbs and all the nice things JB had to say about BE being a friend for the last 48 years and how he has always respected and loved his approach to Steel Guitar.
This friend had also heard the change in BE's tone so I don't feel like the Lone Ranger any more. It was, as I said, something in the attack so maybe it's a new compressor or new compressor settings. It gave his playing a very distinctive sound.
Anyone else hear what we heard and/or have any opinions on it ??

| Over on Ernie's site in "Ask Buddy" Buddy said he set the middle controls on his Nashville 400 differently from usual. I haven't heard the show yet, but could that be the difference you're talking about? |

I thought I heard a difference too, but wasn't sure if it was simply the contrast between the last two or three times I've heard him. That's been with Don and Phil, through the PA, and Saturday was far more intimate, especially where I was - about twenty feet from the amp!
It's hard to describe, so I won't try!

| I was trying all new amp settings with the bass a little past 3 o'clock, mids at around 9 o'clock, shift at 3 o'clock, treble at 11 o'clock, and presence straight up. I used a MatchBox to clean the mud out, so I'd be interested in hearing about the difference in sound. If it had a high vacuum factor, don't hesitate to say, as it was an experiment, and if I have to go back to the other settings, I can find them on Ernie's site. |

BUDDY; DON'T TOUCH A THING !! This is the most intriguing sound I have ever heard and yes, it is hard to describe adequately. I would surely like to hear more of it and God Forbid if that was a one time thing and it's lost !! That would be awful. Frank Crawley was the other steel man here in Macon who heard what I, and now some others, heard. I'm not at all sure what a high vacumn factor is but it dang sure sounds like what we are referring to.
I haven't been this excited about a steel guitar sound since I was in Holland and heard your work on The Other Woman/Ray Price. I couldn't believe what I was hearing back then or the other night. And I for one, now know for certain why all those guys were there the other night. We all know without a shadow of a doubt who and what Buddy Emmons is all about. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't and Johnny Bush was dead on last night as well. He knows !!

Just between you and me, the high vacuum factor was a polite way of asking if the tone sucked.

I think it sounded a lot like some of the old push-pull recordings. Sweet, thick and full, but with an edge of high end. I guess I wouldn't change anything either.

OK - everyone else is sticking their neck out - I'll have a go, too!
The tone was more shrill, somehow, and three-dimensional. I, too, found it a very exciting sound!
There was no trace of the muddiness that can, in certain circumstances, beset the lower registers of a steel guitar. I think Ernie's spot-on - it was very 'p/p' like, but that doesn't totally sum it up. There was an ethereal quality to it.....
That's it, I'm getting too poetic! Suffice to say, Buddy, you sent us all home re-evaluating things, like you usually do!

I'm glad everyone got so much out of a gathering of true legends.
So what did anyone think of Justin? I will state again it costs him to fly to Nashville
but he would not miss this chance to play with Emmons.
