Yes, I saw that. Rod sells vintage guitar parts, never complete guitars. He gets a lot of criticism for that, and he just laughs it off. I would like to believe that Rod is parting out PARTS GUITARS that are INCOMPLETE anyway... I hope so.
I bought a couple of hard-to-find original 1968 telecaster parts from Rod a couple of years ago, and I was thankful to get them. I paid Rod top dollar for them, and my '68 tele is now complete and 'correct'. Some vintage guitars are worth crazy money, and their Parts are also worth crazy money. But lap steels... most lap steels are valued under $1000... some way under. What sense does it make to destroy a working lap steel just to make a couple of bucks? But worse than that, it shows no respect for the instrument and no respect for our musical heritage. I hope Rod is not doing that.

| The thing with that is that when the instrument is parted out there are a lot of other instruments that are being made whole; I despise seeing cool vintage instruments disappearing and it is hard not to want to choke them for it, but the trade does help restore a lot of very nice instruments back to usefulness. |

I think Keith is correct. People don't pay big bucks for parts unless they really need them to get an instrument back together. I would think that back when all these guitars were not worth much, like in the 70s etc, a lot of them lost some of the parts, like bridge covers etc. People didn't likely repair tuner pans, just found another one and tossed the old one. Makes ya cringe, doesn't it  |
