Topic: Kansas City area steel? |

Are there some places to hear steel guitar or bluegrass in Olathe, KS? how about music and record shops?
My job (I'm a pilot)takes me to Olathe, KS about once a week on different days. I get there about 5AM the first day and leave at 3AM the 3rd morning. Occasionally I'll be there for the weekend.

Not much going on around the greater Kansas City area in the way of live Steel Guitar. A Saturday night opry show or two and, some one-nighters if you can find out where they are.
We do have a Steel Guitar Club in the area that has Saturday afternoon jams every other month (The next one will be the latter part of March) and you would be welcome to set in. Someone would even share their axe if you don't carry yours.
Give me a call next time you are in town and we will see what is going on. Maybe we can catch one of the guys live. Also, Bruce Zumsteg who builds the Zumsteel guitars is within driving distance of Olathe, Ks. He is one hell of a player and has tone to die for... but he seldom ever plays out anywhere.

I'll keep your number handy for when I'm there over the weekend. Hopefully it's the same time as the club get togethers. About the only room I have is to carry a small lap steel in a gig bag. This way i can still have some fun and beat the boredom of the hotel.
I'm on a rotating schedule so every week it's a different day that I'm there. We have 3 planes flying in each morning and we switch out the pilots. Kinda like the 24 hours of LeMans! This way the planes are always in the air making money.

You should visit Mountain Music Shoppe. There aren't a lot of steel players in town, but all the bluegrass cats hang out there.
There's very little going on out in Olathe, but if you care to venture into Kansas City you might catch Rex Hobart's dinner hour show at The Record Bar. Rex was a Bloodshot Records artist a few years ago when alt-country was all the rage; his dinner hour show has a revolving cast but usually involves a steel player.
Oh, and I play non-pedal every Wednesday from 9-midnight at Davey's Uptown (which is actually in Midtown) with a group called Mr.Marco's V7. We play very little country, however... |

We have out next Kansas City jam set for Saturday, March the 29th. We use a nice big room in the basement of a church located at 6400 State Line Rd (State Line runs north & south and divides the Missouri-Kansas part of the city. You are welcome to join us for the afternoon. If it works out, gimme a call and I can give you specific directions from Olathe. It's not that far.

Hey Joe,
I have a list of most of the steel guys in town. If you have a particular date that you will be in Olathe, I can email the list and see who is playing. There are weekend shows at the Middle Creek Opry in Louisburg and Bobbe DeMoss is a killer player. During week days such as Tuesdays, sometimes Darryl Loque is playing with Rex Hobart (Record Bar), on Wednesdays, Tater and the Gravy Train (Harry's Country Club) sometimes will have a steeler sit in or an open steel seat where we all take turns. That might be something that could be done with a little planning and one of us locals bringing a steel. Who knows, we will be having a steel jam on Saturday afternoons from time to time and next one is scheduled March 29. The Deraileurs are coming to town at Knuckleheads in a few weeks I hear, etc. etc. So there are all kinds of possibilities depending on when on are the ground. |
