The premiere of the Concerto for Pedal Steel Guitar and Orchestra which was scheduled to be performed by the Nashville Chamber Orchestra in April has been postponed until at least this fall.
Originally, Paul Franklin agreed to be the soloist, but backed out last month, citing the work's difficulty. An intense effort to find a replacement was undertaken, but ran afoul of player's schedule conflicts with the performances.
We do not yet have a confirmed replacement for Paul Franklin, but the conductor of the orchestra, Paul Gambill, has someone he hopes will do it.
I apologize to anyone who made plans to go to Nashville to see the show and will post when new plans are set.

How 'bout Hal Rugg? Hal reads "real" music.

Excuse me for laughing, Michael, but if the work is too difficult for Paul Franklin, well... Hahahahahahaha.... I'm sorry for laughing, it's just that.... you'll probably have to start looking on another planet for a substitute... [This message was edited by Jim Cohen on 28 February 2002 at 06:49 AM.] |

Jim
I'm sitting in the house on my own - I, too, actually laughed out loud!

Unfortunately, Paul Franklin never returned my many calls and emails to explain what he meant, despite my offers to make any adjustments he needed. Hal Rugg listened to my mockup and did not think the piece was unplayable--it just required more preparation than he had time for. I'm guessing that's what Paul meant.
There's also the possibility that he just hated it and didn't have the heart to tell me so.
Several other players have since heard it and/or looked at the score and had similar reactions (that it required preparation, not that they hated it!). Ultimately, we will need a virtuosic player who has the time and interest to play the piece.
As I wrote before, Paul Gambill, the conductor, believes he has a good prospect. I'll let you guys know when I know. |

I know someone who could play it, if he had the time.

If it's playable, Tommy White could nail it with an hours practice at the most. Otherwise, good luck!
......Of course, you could postpone this until after October 4 and let "Mr. Nashville Sound" dazzle the crowd. |
