Topic: Backing up files |

Excuse my computer ignorance but I discovered that I am unsure of how to do a proper backup. The time is nigh that i get something done, I am not sure how much longer this monster will keep chugging.
- I suppose I should use the Backup feature in Accessories?
- Should I choose the option that lets me back up files of my own choosing, and let Windows make a rescue disk? or maybe they called it boot disk
- The only option I am given for storage is the A floppy drive. No good cause and I'd need a million disks.
-Can I direct Backup to back up the files onto either CD or DVD? If so, when I'm done setting up, will Backup then burn the CD/DVD without any further input from me?
- Will Backup tell me when a disk is full and prompt me to put in a new disk?
I hope this will work since I don't have zip drives,
slave hard drives etc. |

Bent;
Windows Backup, up to the version for XP will not save or restore backups to CDs or DVDs. These drives will simply not appear in the list of target destinations. If you can purchase an decent external USB drive, Windows will allow you to save or restore to/from it.
Your best backup choice, using Windows Backups, is to first save your Files and Settings, using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. Follow the instructions to save From Old Computer to a file on the new external disk you will buy. Select all of your personal files and settings to send to it. It may be a huge backup and take awhile.
After this completes - successfully - you can run a complete backup of everything on the C drive and save it to file on the external drive.
Your next step is going to depend on what you do from here, so I'll await your input.

Wiz,
I followed your instructions, but all I got on my external hard drive was DAT files, when the wizard was finished.
Is that correct, or have I fouled up somewhere? |

Yes, those are the extensions of the backup files used by the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. (Dere's dese, dose, dem and dat. Stay where you're to and I'll come where you're at! <small>A Newfie song</small>)

I did a back up today, saving all "my docusments" file..including my music and some other stuff.. no problems at all ( saved to external HD ..)
I tried to back up my ITunes songs but could not export or back up naything.. any ideas? |
