I have the serial number from this Fender Twin Reverb amp...it is A 01741

I also have pictures coming..Not sure if I know how to upload them or not...Thanks again for all the info... Smile

Hi Again...I talked to my friend about the Fender amp again...Not positive of the year now as I was also on a couple of sites on the internet and I see where it doesn't list reverb until later dates...he says it is a twin reverb and it is tweed covering and he says he bought it used in '62 from a friend of his that he worked with. He's supposed to get the serial number off from it for me and maybe a picture of it so that should tell alot. I'm just curious as to the year of it now. Thanks everyone for the help on this, I ggreatly appreciate it. Smile

A friend of mine has a '58 Fender Twin Reverb amp that he is thinking of selling and I was asked if I could try to find out the value of the amp. I have not seen it but he says it is in great condition and the only thing that has been done to it is that the speakers were changed to JBL's. It has the tweed covering and he is pretty sure it is either a '58 or '59. Does anyome know the value of an amp like this or know of any websites that I can look on or possibly someone to call. I know that the value of this amp is high as all oler fender amps are but would like to find out what it might be worth as he is thinking of selling it but needs to know the value of it to put a starting price on it...Thank you very much for any info that I can get of this.

the Twin Reverb with reverb wasn't even offered by Fender till about 1965 maybe '64 but rare .. , a 1958 Twin will NOT have reverb, and will have a tweed type covering, if it is covered in the tweed material I'm intrested in buying it .. call me... 570-829-7908 in Pa to discuss it....... Best ... Bob

If that's a 58 tweed twin, it's worth a *lot* of money (even with non original speakers). Check out completed listings on ebay. This amp has been used famously by a bunch of rock guitar players (including Clapton).

The JBL's might be original anyway. Yes, these things go for huge money. That's why I have a Victoria copy of one.

A really crappy looking one with non-original speakers sold on ebay not too long ago for $9000. But allegedly it had been played by Eric Clapton (don't know if that contributed to the hype).

The 2008 VGM Price Guide lists a 1958-1959 Fender tweed Twin amp at $12,000 to $17,000 (in excellent, all-original condition).

The replaced speakers would cut into the value, but you said the amp is otherwise in great condition. I would advise your friend to keep the amp. In five years it will probably be worth 30K. If I owned this amp I would never sell it. BTW, that's the amp Santo used when he recorded Sleep Walk.

Excellent low-end "Book Price" is about 7 grand, and value now (with replaced speakers) probably would be about $5,500, perhaps less based on condition. Real collectors are quite picky, but I've seen wealthy buyers pay twice what something's worth just to have it. Hard to tell these days, although the market has softened a little already this year, probably from the banking crunch.

One reason the price is so high on these might be because the Rolling Stones bought them all up. On their last tour they had about 30 of them on stage. Rolling Eyes

1963 is when the Twin got it's reverb. The Twin Reverb and the Vibroverb(brown tolex with two 10s, then mid '63 a black tolex version with a single 15) were Fender's first two reverb combo's. Most of the rest of their amps got reverb the next year in '64.

Back to the "Tweed Twin", there is also a big price difference between the 5E8 Twin (two 6L6 Tubes at 40 watts) and the 5F8 Twin (four 5881 Tubes at 80 watts).
JBL's were special order up to '58 then offered as an option from '59 on.

Fender's Custom Shop is making a reissue of the "Low Power Tweed Twin" (the 40 watt version) called the "'57 Twin". It's actually a nice sounding amp, all hand wired 5E8-A circuit. Cost about $2400 Street price.

From what I was told by Fender Clapton's playing the reissues on tour.

And yes - there's no such animal as a tweed Twin Reverb. However, players have added reverb to tweed amps over the years. It devalues them significantly, but most were done before the "vintage craze" hit.

There are several subtypes of "tweed" Twins as noted; photos of front, top, back, speaker and transformer codes and the chassis (opened) along with the paper label (often and easily faked) are necessary to properly date and value one.

Not that anyone cares, but my impression is that almost all of the tweed Twins left are either owned by Clapton, the Stones, or Steven Seagal.

The amp you described is above. That year was the high powered Tweed Twin (4 power tubes) The early was called the Low Power tweed Twin with 2 power tubes.

I built a low powered Tweed Twin. A nice amp for sure.

I might take on the High Powered on next. Takes about a day or two to build one from a Mojotone kit. Could be an interesting amp!

I have the serial number from this Fender Twin Reverb amp...it is A 01741

I don't think this amp is all-original.
According to the reference material I have, there was No Tweed covered Twin Reverb made. (maybe some recent custom shop amps, but no originals).

The serial number indicates 1965. That number is stamped on the amp chassis, not on the cabinet.

The TWIN (non-reverb) was made from 1952 until 1963. Tweed covered cabinets (on the Twin) were dicontinued by 1960.

The TWIN REVERB was introduced in 1963. Twin Reverbs were black tolex covered.

Someone has done some tinkering. This is either a 1965 Twin Reverb with a recovered (tweed) cabinet, OR a late 1950s tweed Twin cabinet with a '65 Twin Reverb chassis installed.

Your friend says he bought the amp in '62, but memories fade. One of my guitar students recently brought in a nice old Martin D-28 that her mother told her she bought in the "early 1960's". However the serial number revealed 1969.

NEVER pay big bucks for a "vintage" amp or guitar without having it professionally appraised! The recent upsurge in prices have brought many forgeries and fakes into the marketplace, and it takes a real expert to ferret out some of them.

In this particular case, it appears neither the potential buyer or seller have much knowledge, so find someone reputable who does...and have them do a hands-on appraisal.

What Doug said. He and I refer to the same serial number database, which is invaluable when dating Fender amps.

And as stated, the serial number and "tweed" don't mix....neither does the supposed 1958 date.

Isn't there any way to post pics of the amp in question? We could solve the whole mystery pretty quickly.

I wish we had seen those pictures earlier. It's a 1965 blackface Twin Reverb... (not tweed covered). It has it's original black tolex covering. It looks to be in nice shape.

Last year these were selling for about $2200 to $2600 in all-original, excellent condition. The market has come down somewhat in recent months, and this particular amp has replacement speakers. I would say the current price range for this amp is about $1600 to $2000, considering the speakers. Other Forum members may have different estimates. The amp should also be checked out by an amp repair shop to verify that the transformers are original. It's a great guitar amp.

Fender currently makes a reissue of this amp called '65 Twin Reverb. Your friend can sell his as an original hand-wired 1965 Twin Reverb, "Not a reissue".

I could be wrong, but I don't believe the JBL speakers are original. A Twin Reverb of that vintage could have been ordered with JBL D-120F's, but those appear to be K-120's, and are probably newer.
