For me, it was just a matter of doing it (preforming) again and again and again. After a while, I just got sick of being sick. Knowing the material well is the best thing. Then you can go into autopilot. I'm still a little jittery at times, but I make it work. You're on the right track, my hat's off to you.

Calvin,

I think that's better than the last one, just need to keep at it my friend.

Nerves,,well everyone has to deal with that in some kind of way, I think chris has the right idea, learn the material well, and just keep on playing. Very Happy

ps. Have you got back home to Colorado yet? When you get there if you'll email me a snail mail address I've got something to send you.

Larry

Calvin,

It's never easy sitting down with a camera rolling along with trying to play flawlessly to a rhythm track.

It sounded like you had decided to just sit down and play to a tune you hadn't worked out any particular ideas and just got frustrated at the end.

My suggestion would be to work out your intro's leads and outro's so you don't have to think about them while the camera is rolling.

Stay with it.

Hey Calvin...Just like Dick said it is definitely hard sitting behind a camera or playing live for that matter...I too have to...what I call settle in and try to blank out everything but the music I am playing to at that moment. Just keep on practicing and it will get easier with time...I can promise you that...your sounding better, just stay with it. Take care...Brian

Calvin,
Turn the camera on, sit down and turn the tracks on and play. Then when the song is over, go back to the top of the tracks and play it again. Then play it again, then again until you forget about the camera and just focus on playing the song.
And one more thing, STOP LEANING ON YOUR RIGHT FOREARM on the pad of your guitar. NO NO!!!!
Bring you right elbow closer to your ribs and let that contact be you "home point/anchor" for your right arm and hand, not the pad of your guitar.
It's there to lean on when your laying out and checking out the pretty girls on the dance floor! LOL

It seems you have the "Deer In The Headlights" syndrome....uh oh here it comes here it really comes and the track overwhelmes you. I recommend this pick one phrase the most basic walk in the whole world and see if you can fit that in against each chord moving it appropriately at the right time...avoid at all cost three finger grips at this juncture, you want to build you confidence with the simplest backup phrase possible...using thumb and first or second finger. Use a metronome first before you start playing with that track and see if you can execute the phrase whatever phrase you are using cleanly..do not set the metronome any faster at first than you can play the lick any lick cleanly. Thats what I would do.

i have been thinking about something that happened to me a few years ago

i paint, but i had the same problem with people watching me paint, it made me very very nervous

we were in a campground in Texas during the middle of the week and the campground was deserted
it was a beautiful warm day, so it thought why not go outside and paint since on one was around
...well i got so involved with what i was painting that i forgot that i was outside... until a lady said "thats beautiul"
.. scared the hell out of me..
i looked around to see not one, but 6 people standing less than 10 feet away, watching me
..the lady that broke the silence bought my painting before i even finished it.
after that i never cared who watched me paint .
maybe i need to do something like that with my steel playing

Yes!!! Try what I said in my 1st post on this!
Turn the camera on, let that sucker just run, play the song over and over until you forget about the camera and just play the song. When you look at what the camera recorded, you will hear yourself playing it better and smoother each time through and just like your painting experience, once you get lost in playing as you were in painting, you'll be "in the zone" just like that day!

Yes, the distance between where you amp is and where your ears are will have an effect on how you hear it.
Try to put your amp on one side and your player with the tracks on the other side, in effect put yourself in between them as if they were a BIG set of headphones. You should be able to find a volume level for the tracks that will allow you to hear the tracks and play your steel at a balanced volume so you will hear the tracks in one ear and the steel in the other and be able to balance it out with your playing volume level.
Also, where you place the camera will effect the balance of what it "hears" when you tape yourself.
It looked like the camera was looking directly at the speakers of the player and your amp sound was off to the side as the camera would "hear" it.
Position the camera so it gets that same "BIG" set of headphones sound that your hearing and it will be a more accurate recording of the sound with better balance between the tracks and your guitar.

i have the sound tracks going into the same amp
so to me it sounds like the steel is on the tracks
is this a bad way of doing it

No, its not a bad way to do it, but maybe try turing your guitar around so your facing the amp and hearing the tracks and your guitar face on.

Calvin, drop me a line when you get back home.

I'd like to try to help you with the nerve thing, If I can.
If we could redirect your focus, and redefine your personal goals a little, I think you'll be more apt to achieve better level of comfort, and satisfaction.
