BIAB 2006 + new PC running Vista.
When I open BIAB I get the following message:
"Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth Otuput driver is installed properly but is currently in use by another program."
This prevents any song files from being played! I was on chat mode with PG Music who pointed me to a FAQ which said that BIAB may be getting confused because of a conflict with something, possibly by Yamaha. Following this thread leads you to running regedit to remove the troublesome file. But how can I tell which one is bad? Besides, my PC is a month old, and I don't like the idea of messing with the registry. Any ideas?

The Microsoft MIDI Synth wavetable is not very good. If you got the version that includes the Roland VSC33 MID synth use that instead, it's much better. If you are trying to use the MS Wave Table I assume you only got the integrated audio (on the motherboard) rather than an optional SoundBlaster sound card as the SoundBlaster has hardware synths that are equivalent to the Roland.
As far as what else is using the MIDI synth ?? If you have some other media player open or some other sound application open that could be where the conflict is. When you open BIAB, don't have any other application open and see if that helps. The task manager may show what else is running. In Vista CTRL/SHIFT/ESC will bring up the Task Manager.
When editing the registry be careful. Before doing any changing, backup (save) the registry in case you change something you shouldn't. |

Hi Jack,
Last night I did try installing Roland VSC3, but after rebooting the PC, I got a message that a DLL could not be loaded. So, I uninstalled it. (One problem at a time.) I am not by the PC right now and so I can't provide details on that DLL. Perhaps I'll try to solve the Roland installation problem tonight. (This is an HP PC with a built in sound card.)
I did look at the Task Mgr last night and saw that nothing was running.
I also uninstalled BIAB and reinstalled it just for fun to be sure everything was in a default state.
About the registry, I agree that it is not good to mess with it, System Restore notwithstanding. And even though I have fixed things by removing files from the registry in other versions of Windows, I hate doing so since given my lack of understanding of how it really works.

Hi Lloyd,
I believe that you are onto it because after I set up the PC I ran BIAB OK. Then a few weeks ago I decided to record something and installed the drivers to a Yamaha AW1600, which were necessary for the USB connection, but did not try BIAB again until last night. Sooooo, looking in the registry, how can I tell which file is the one causing the trouble?
Also, do you think that this will then cause problems with the AW1600?

Joe, I can't remember what the Yamaha code was,but you can go to Band in the Box Help and talk to them. There is something in Yamaha that interfears with band in the box. Live help will talk you threw it. I know that is your problem.....Lloyd |

The person at PG Live Chat was unable to help me regarding the registry.
So I tried loading Roland DXi and selected the MIDI drivers option. BIAB still complains when I bring up a song, but if I just click on the first bar it plays and produces sound.
PG Music needs to fix their wonky drivers. Like it or not, Vista will probably be with us a while.
Thanks for the responses. Now I can work on Big Jim Baron's disks having only about about 9999 more songs to go through

I set a System Restore point and then used regedit and deleted xgusb.cpl. |
