Hey Boston-area forumites - heads up re a mini-concert and lecture this coming Monday am at the Boston Museum of fine Arts:
Gallery Activities - The Lap Steel Guitar
11 am — 12 pm Musical Instruments Gallery
Grammy award-winning guitarist Ed Gerhard will be joined by MFA curator Darcy Kuronen to talk about the history, design, and music of the lap steel guitar, from the 1930s through the early ‘50s. Included will be live demonstrations by Gerhard on the Museum’s Dobro Hawaiian model, Rickenbacker BD, National Dynamic, and Gibson Ultratone instruments.

Does the BMFA have a permanent collection of lap steels or is this just a temporary exhibit? |

Richard, the MFA has a small, but choice collection of guitars including a handful of lap steels in their permanent collection. The musical instrument curator is a guitar fan and mounted a big guitar show called "Dangerous Curves: The Art of the Guitar" in 2000. Looks like you can still get the catalog:

Andy, if you go, please ask him about his (semi-fretted) Breedlove steel. I'd be especially interested to know if there are any recordings of his that feature it. |
