He came out and sat in with us last night at the Long Hollow Jamboree. It's amazing, the fat chords he can get out of this double-neck 8-string Fender w/o pedals. What a player! He bought this guitar in 1951, and he says he's got only two more payments on it.

Yes, what an amazing player  In my opinion he was a large part in making Hank Snow what he was.

| Kayton is from Lake Panasoffkee, Fl (next town east of where I'm at). I work a job there every Tuesday. A Singer/Lead Picker, Eddie Caruthers, that comes to the gig when he's in town used to either baby sit for Kayton's family or vice versa - not shure which. Eddie said he took Kayton to Wildwood Fl to catch the bus when he got the picking job with Hank in Nashville. |

My dad was a huge HANK SNOW fan and was also a fan of steel. My dad`s cousin lived in GARDNER,MASS. and pleayed the same way as Mr. Kayton does. William "Bill" Saulnier was his name. Passed away a couple of years ago. I got a chance to see KAYTON last year when he came our way for a HANK SNOW tribute show. Boy what an entertainer.Great musician.Reminded me of Bill  |

Always loved Kayton's playing,also Hank was my first musical hero,still is,When I was 10 years old living on a farm in Ga.,heard Hank doing [Moving On]on our little radio,He is the one that set me on fire and made me want to play,had no TV back then,had no idea what he looked like,Finnaly got to see him at the Rylander theater in the little town of Americus Ga,With that huge clear voice I expected to see a man about six and a half feet tall,His steel player was a big guy sitting in a chair playing a lap steel,that was the first time I saw a steel guitar in person,I think his name was Big Jim or something like that,Do any of you know who he was,and was he playing on the record,Moving On?Also did'nt Kayton and Herb Remington do a instrumental album a few years ago?DYKBC.

Charles, the player was Big Joe Talbot who can be heard on almost all of Hank's original recordings from the 50s.

I've had so little exposure to Mr. Roberts but from the first time I saw him on the Opry a few years ago (with Hank III? Probably. I can't recall) I've been infatuated with the guy. That photo is exactly what I remember---hunkered over the Dual Pro with a leg wrapped around the guitar leg. Playing stuff I thought you weren't supposed to play on a non-pedal guitar.
Shame about the payments. You just know he's gonna get into a fender bender (pun not intended...well maybe sort of...) the day after he pays it off. Or a pick up will fall off. |

Thanks Walter for the info.As I said Hank was the first star I ever saw in person,over a half century ago,but still remember it clearly,Years later played in bands that opened shows for Hank,but that first time was special.DYKBC.

I've always admired Kayton's playing. And he has got to be the king of "harmonics", or mighty dadgummed close!
But it sure makes my back hurt just to see the way he sits bent over that steel!  |

I met Kayton Roberts in 1969 or 1970 at an outdoor concert near Dresser, Wisconsin. He hadn't been with Hank Snow very long at the time.
Hank's fiddler, Chubby Wise had recommended Kayton for the job.

I was lucky enough to be on several package shows wit Hank over the years. Kayton is as good as it gets, great player and a wonderful person. "Tammy" was one song I always requested of Hank and Kayton, dont get no better.

Do I understand right that he uses Jerry Byrd's 8 string C6/A7 tuning on his main neck? And what does he use on neck #2? He uses string pulls, too, n'est pas?

I've been a Kayton Roberts fan for over 30 years and I would love to book him on one of our steel guitar shows here in Missouri.
Recently, I purchased a new CD that Kayton has released through DeWitt Scotty's at St. Louis and it is simply wonderful. This Cd shows you what a Master can do on a double 8 stringer with no pedals. Wish I could play a small piece like him.
Next, I have tried to contact him to get him here to one of our steel guitar shows, but the address that someone gave me was wrong. Does anyone have a telephone number where he can be reached?

| On the subject of Kayton, I heard Jeff Newman make the statement that if Kayton had taken up the pedal steel, nobody would have been able to top him. I wonder if Kayton ever had a pedal steel and toyed with it? |

I'd always wondered that too, and just noticed that there's a D-10 Emmons right behind him in the picture at the top of this thread. Anybody know anymore about that; is that his Emmons, or...? |

Went to see Kayton the other night with Chris Scruggs, who plays great steel too but was on guitar and vocals for his own gig. Kayton took solos on every song and blew the crowd of (mostly) non-steel players away, he was the star of the show for sure (sorry Chris; more power to you for hiring one of your heroes and letting him upstage you!).
What an incredible player; I'd seen him play quite a few times but not where he could REALLY cut loose in so many styles, from Hawaiian to country to swing to totally unhinged rockabilly (it was some of the best rock and roll steel playing I've ever seen). It was incredibly inspiring... |
