Hi,
I posted last December that 2008 was going to be the year that I would finally learn to play pedal steel. Over the holidays, I bought an Excel S-10 from Don Curtis at Scotty's in St. Louis. Don set me up nicely(thanks Don!) and away I drove back to Pelham, NY.
I've been using the Mel Bay book that Don recommended along with some other materials Don gave me and stuff that I've found on-line. I think however that I could definitely benefit from some lessons.
Can anybody recommend a teacher living in Westchester County, which is just north or NYC, or in Fairfield County Connecticut, which is about 15 miles from my home in Pelham?
Also, I will be in Austin the week of February 18th. (My son is thinking about being a Yankee at UT!) While I'm there, it would be cool if I can take a lesson or two from someone. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Regards to all,
Ed |

Ed.
If you make it to Austin and have the time Neil Flanz is giving lessons. You should be able to track him down here on the forum.
Great player.
If your journeys allow to sneak through the DFW area, Mr Reece Anderson will fill your head with enough in two hours to keep you going for several months.
Regards,

Hello Ed,
Glad to see you got a guitar and are ready to get started. Bob Hoffnar, in Brooklyn teaches. Look at "On Line Steelers," on the internet, and click on NY State. It lists all the players in NY State who have registered.
If you have a day off, give me a call and bring your steel up to my shop in Walton, NY. I am about 2 hours north west of you, south of Oneonta, east of Binghamton. I would spend two or three hours with you and give you a lot to think about in getting started. my phone is 607 865-5670 days. I will be closed this Monday, but am normally in my shop Monday to Friday, 9 AM untill 5:30 PM.

Dear Ed,
There are a number of very good very qualified people who are within a reasonable distance who can help you a lot. There are an equal or larger number of poseurs.
Don't hesitate to audition your teacher!
Take the time to go out and hear any potential teacher playing live. Whereas a great live performer may not be the best teacher per se, live performance is the greatest BS filter around. Then you will know who you want to learn from, and you will have an idea as to the direction your teacher will take you. |

Ed,
Absolutely, without question, contact John Widgren. He lives in Wilton CT. He is superb as a player and as a teacher. Please email me if you wish to discuss this.

By the way he is playing tomorrow, Monday, evening at the Rodeo Bar on corner of 27th and 3rd in Manhattan, with the Western Caravan. He is totally approachable and you could hear and talk to him there. |
