Anyone know anything about these guitars? I tried to do some Internet research, but found very little other than Gene Fields worked for them after Fender. Does anyone know what years they were built? Are they a good guitar? Whatever you can tell me will be helpful.

Hi Joe, I played one for 20 years, got it new in 86 and yes, they are an excellent guitar. If you do a search you will find a wealth of info on them - they have been well discussed on the forum.

They are excellent. Considered by many as one of the all-time best all-pull guitars. The later MCI RangeXpander model is like the EMCI, with the welded aluminum frame, but there are earlier MCI's that do not have the welded frame.

Thanks guys. I was just wondering also, I found references to (Waco or not Waco). Does that mean anything to anyone?

The Waco ones were the earlier version which did not have the welded frame ...the later models are referred to as the Arlington models I think ! So perhaps the factory moved at some stage??

Joe, I had a SD10, EMCI, the welded frame; was an excellant guitar; probably late 80's; seems to me like the factory at that time was in a small town in Tenn, was where Gretch was doing drums & such. Probably shortly before their demise. Only problem was the original pick-up was a bummer, no power or tone to speak of. Changed to a George-L and was a great instrument. Would probably have kept it, but got the itch for a lacquer Mullen. Cool FWIW

Joe, they were yet another Bud Carter design, so that's a "BIG" plus. His designs in this order...M.S.A....MCI...EMCI...Carter. Buddy Emmons played an MCI for some time Smile

MCI/EMCI had some of the best in the business on board. Bud Carter, Gene Fields, Red Rhodes, and The Big E to name a few. The Arlington EMCI is probably the best all pull out there. I still have mine (D10 8/6). It still plays great and sounds great. Gretsch bought the company and virtually took it off the market. Maybe because they were not getting any orders for SHO-BUD which they also owned. This is just IMHO. Jody.

I've owned 2 MCI's and they were great guitars and had tone to the bone. Buddy Emmons, Sara Jory and Ron Elliot, just to name a few, at one time all played EMCI's and they sounded awesome. I especially liked Buddy's Black EMCI.

Here's mine and as you can see they are a lot like a Carter to look at....they also had the extra row of pull rod tuners for the half-stops on the 2nd string on the end plate etc.... just like the later Carters.

Sorry the music stand blocks your view, but I was working !! ha

Thanks guys,

Lotta good stuff here on the brand. Speaking of Carters, I sure like my Magnum now that it has the George L's in it. Nice and smooth action. Stays in tune. Great guitar.

Of course, I've never met a steel guitar I didn't like.
