what was the first song, you learned on the pedal steel ? for me it was. I"ve overlooked an orchid. I was not real good at it,but i was in the ball park.[might not have been in the seats or the field,maybe the bathroom] steel a beginner , 4 years now on the steel.[ hope not to offend anyone with this post] Tk

I was just hummin' it this morning.
"Slowly"
Learned it on my old Fender 1000 with a chromatic D-9th tuning. Ooooo that sound was gooood!

red river valley for me too.....
then as I became mo better....I progressed
into "Red River Rock"......remember RRV with a rock beat....not sure of who recorded it....it was great.
love this instrument.....wish I could really play with some of you guys....have listened to your work...wow....maybe some day...

I worked through the Neil Flanz E9 Instruction method. After I got most of that "pedal mashing" down... I started attempting to apply it to various songs. A lick here and a lick there. I think "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man was the first complete song I ever managed to make it through.

This is off topic, but when I played for the late Jerry Eugene, he sang the Hokey Pokey, and instead of playing on the tune, I would leave the stage and join the dancers. Then at one point Jerry would sing "You put your steel player in you put you steel player out..."

The first song I played was either Red River Valley or Streets of Larado, which ever came first in Winnie's book. The first song I ever figured out on my own was She Thinks I still Care.

I think Red River Rock was done by Johnny and the Hurricanes.
The 1st song that I could play as a solo was "Bummin' Around".

For me, it was probably "Cold, Cold Heart", and "Look At Us" after "Cold, Cold Heart".
