After changing pickups on my Magnum Saturday night, I restrung the guitar and began tuning it. I quickly realized that the fifth string .017 plain was not returning after depressing either A or C pedals. I checked underneath to see that we handn't bent any rods. I checked the end plate to see if the nylon tuners were touching. Nothing wrong, but string still not returning. Finally I just changed the string. Solved the problem.
My question is, how can a string be responsible for this problem? How can the tention differ so drastically between two strings of the same size?

The string may have been mispackaged and was not a .017. |

Jack's theory sounds likely, this has happened to me a few times. If it was truly a plain string of the same gauge, there "should" not be a huge difference. I keep a micrometer in my gig bag to measure string gauges if something seems wrong.
Of course, on a wound, the wrapping material and core type/diameter can change the amount of tension needed to pull, as can changing between wound and plain strings.
I suppose another possibility is that the tie at the ball end could have been slipping. I've had that happen on guitars - it would slip for a while, and then eventually come completely undone. |
