I'm not talking about illegal or prescription drugs... Do any of you take herbal supplements before playing. I have found that a dose of folic acid, 5-htp and Valerian Root really helps take the edge of any jitters I may have before a gig. I have always been a nervous picker and I owe it to heredity from my mother's side but this combo really helps me overcome the anxiety or panic syndrome. Very Happy

I take a lot of Fish Oil on a regular day but on job days I take even more Fish Oil for my arthritis in my thumbs. Don't normally have the jitters at the joints I play.

I have had to stop smoking my favorite herbal supplement for health reasons, but when I was doing it, I found that it had 2 effects on me. It made me more adventurous and creative, but it also caused me to be sloppier and make more mistakes.

The you tube video of me with the Fickle Pigs was shot while I (and the rest of the band) were "supplemented."

All my recordings however were all made while I was stone cold sober.

Ray, you might want to get "supplemented" yourself for that.

Me too.....made me overly self concious when in front of other people and unmotivated when alone.

As far as herbal supplements, I think 95% of them are BS.
Valerian does work to some extent, but really, I think it's better to just learn to deal with the jitters without any "outside help" of any kind, be they herbal, organic, pharmeceutical or whatever.

Most herbal supplements have not been tested for either effectiveness or safety. Also, it is my understanding that labeling laws are less than they should be. In short, as far as I know they don't work, are unsafe for longterm use and have unwanted additives in them. So I avoid them.

I'm not a big herbal remedy kind of guy, but I find that St. John's Wart actually has a calming effect for my occasional nervous condition.

A couple of doses of some hops mixed with a little barley does it for me. Wink

I used to use that remedy too, Andy, but I had to stop. In fact, I am so clean now I'm not sure I qualify as a country musician anymore. No booze, no tobacco, no drugs, or wild women. What is country music coming to?

Rick, I have an IQ of about 89 so I don't need anything to keep me cool and collected. To stupid to get uptight and nervous! Laughing Ray

Rick you are a great player why get nervous? I take a B12 complex daily. Of course a wellness physician would tell you the best thing is water. Water keeps all the junk and toxins flushed out of your system. If your mind is all clogged up from "stuff" in your body it can't function. I eat right, drink lots of water, excercise, avoid stress get a chiropractic adjustment once a week. (Everything stems from a out of sync nervous system.) As far as supplements and their risk factor. I would rather take a risk on something natural as opposed to years of addiction to something a doctor would prescribe. Most drugs handed out by doctors are more habit forming than helpful.Just my opinion.

Ray, I would absolutely have a panic attack if I had to even imagine being in charge of a big show like you do each year!!

And Scotty, I'm not talking about prescription drugs. I'm asking if any of you guys happen to take herbal supplements to ease the nerves and clear the mind. I found that my best combo for this is Valerian and Ginki Biloba. Scotty, you don't need a supplement. You are a entertainment machine that just needs a nicorette pellet once in a while. Very Happy

p.s. Ray, my bad luck has not ran out yet. Me and Deb were getting ready for the Sunday Meeting and I read that it was cancelled right after I posted our message. So Debbie decides I need to saw some firewood. I wound up burning the devils pitchfork on my hand with a stupid move on the hot gas engine. But I did get the wood in with a trail of tears and 20 coats of aloe vera. And today I had a large lump removed from my neck at Cox Hospital and the pain medicine is not meeting it's expectations..... Whoa is me.. Sad

If you think drug use among musicians is just for hippies and hillbillies, you may be as surprised as I was when I read articles like these recently
http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-braindoping20dec20,1,7766974,full.story?coll=la-news-science
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/10/17/MNGB599PJC1.DTL
in which we learn that very high percentage of serious musicians use drugs regularly to control performance anxiety. "They say" that almost everyone uses them for auditions. These are not junkies using sedatives. Most of it is such is beta blockers such as Inderal. There are apparently 3 or 4 other classes of commonly used drugs as well. The only thing I ever used to control anxiety was mixed with ice and tonic water, and unfortunately it messed with my coordination and made me play worse.
Have any of you used beta blockers?

The last time I took an Herbal supplement I think it was called something like "MAUI WOWEE". I don't know, I forget. It was a long time ago and I'm much happier now sipping my decaf coffee. Is that an Herb?

I like a cup of coffee with a jigger of dark rum. Somehow it relaxes me and peps me up at the same time. Smile

I like to have one cold one before I pick. 1st break a little Jigger of Dark Rum and a little Maui Wowee with Tonic water on the side. Then just a touch of Valerian and a snap of Ginki Biloba along with a good smoke. 2nd break I start off with some B12 complex mixed with a few hops and a little barley. Now my nerves are a little jumpy, so my Doctor gave me St.Johns Wart tabs.to chew on. I feel much better now, thank you! 3rd set I take a few placebos tabs. to relax and feel like a fickle pig.I enjoy smoking my favorite Herbal supplements with my Folic acid shots with 5htp root ups on the side. WoW! Its time to pack it up! I must not forget my fish oil on my way home to my lake house. Dont know why I have so much gas,, Whaeeeee!!

I have been on herbal supplements for years. Not for nervous, but for overall health. It works great for me or I would not have been able to do 88 gigs last year plus several steel guitar shows and steel guitar assns. meetings at age 77. Jody.
